Everyone that paid $328 dollars to receive St. Matthew's Medical Insurance should be refunded that only if you have your own medical insurance. SMU's insurance plan has two criteria that most US isurance companies have never heard of. And you can only get the insurance waiver if your insurance covers these two things. First, Medical Evacuation from the island. Well, we are not on an island anymore and most everyone's insurance will cover anywhere in the US. Second, Medical repatriation from the island. Again, we are not on the island anymore. (side note; repatriation involves moving one's dead body to another location). Furthermore, being in the US (Maine) most people that already have some type of medical insurance should be suffient and should be refund the $328 for any or all semesters in Maine.

Insurance premiums are paid to the third party provider at the start of each term. So, there is no money to be refunded.
You are still being covered by that policy in Maine.
I know of no insurance provider that will refund premiums, once paid.

per school official, if you have proof of Medical Evacuation from your US insurance, "charges will be waived". Insurance submission deadline to get a waiver is Oct. 1st.

I'm going off the letter that goes out with the insurance package that states:
"In order to secure this rate, all students must be enrolled (both Basic Sciences and Clinical) in MEGA health insurance program or waiver out by submitting, within seven days after the first day of class of each semester, an ID card and a complete copy of another health insurance program which then must be judged by a qualified SMU staff person as comparable in benefits and location of coverage."
That's what I've got.

Sometimes I don't give us enough credit for flexibilty.
SMU prevailed upon the insurer to extend the deadline (and agree to refund anyone who opted out). That email went out today, out of the Niceville office. I was not aware of the extension, and went by what was off the letter.
In other news, I'm retiring and letting jguru2 take my job, in addition to his studies. This is twice where he got the info before I did.
My fault.

This is what I got from the mail dated last friday from "accountspayable"
Dear Students:
I am very glad to hear that everyone is safe and unharmed after these recent storms that have undoubtedly affected us all. I want to extend an apology as some have called with questions concerning the progress of the Cayman campus as well as arrivals in Maine and I have not had those answers. Please continue to be patient as all unfolds.
Since some students will now be in the US and not in Cayman for the semester, waiver eligibility will change for some. It is still required that you carry a medical evacuation benefit but it seems that some policies do have the coverage within the states. Please contact me via email if you believe this to be true of your individual policies.
For all, including those in Maine, I must have proof of medical evacuation. If it is not stated in these terms within your policy in my office, I will not approve your waiver and you will continue to be charged the premiums for Student Insurance. Do not hesitate to contact your insurance company to obtain proof and have it faxed to my attention at xxx-xxx-xxxx. [MY EDIT]
It seems this has been the longest registration in history due to the storms that continue to threaten areas associated with St. Matthew’s. I am extending the insurance deadline to Friday, October 1st to receive your waivers and proof of medical evacuation coverage. Anything received after will automatically be denied and the charge for Student Insurance will stand.
Please, I hate to say this over and over, I must have proof of medical evacuation and it must be stated by your insurance carrier in these terms. When I ask for this proof, I continue to receive statements of coverage. This simply tells me that you do have insurance. I require a policy or a statement from the company providing proof of medical evacuation, without it your waiver is denied and charges will remain. I want this to be very clear as some students begin graduation proceedings and don’t know what these charges are for. If you have not proved this benefit you have been charged, beyond the deadline each semester, those charges cannot be removed. This requirement must be met each and every semester whether you are attending classes, rotations, leave of absence, or national board. (National Board and LOA do not need carry insurance but do need to turn in a waiver else be charged insurance.)
Everyone, take care and stay safe, study hard and do us all proud! Let me know of any questions about anything and I will help in every way that I can.
