View Full Version : Saba University School of Medicine propaganda, or everything

No matter what topic you read here, all they are cut by the same model, and the model is to praise all the marvelous things related to this school.
For example, today I opened the one entitled " I had to respond to the Saba California issue" in http://www.valuemd.com/viewtopic.php?t=24422
First of all it is extremely impressive that a medical school on a 5 square mile island in the Carribean had the credentials to even warrant a site visit from California...
Strange, to say the least... This guy comes just to state this...
While in all the other posts, no significant complaints at all, everything is perfect!! Oh, of course some goats are ugly, and some locals are nasty, and some products are expensive, and some Winair pilots are tough, but at the end, everybody is happy.
What a perfect piece of paradise!
Hooray for Saba University School of Medicine, David Fredrick and especially Researching Guy (MC)! Saba and maybe the whole Caribbean would sink into the ocean, if one day SUSOM disappears!

Well, if all of the grads at Saba are like Dr. Scott Jones I'd say hurray....I met him and realize that he is going to make a great MD. Mayos-Scottsdale is a top notch residency.

Dear Dr. Pepper,
Haven't you heard that SABA is really a front for the CIA? What's your motive or is it the caffeine getting to your head. We, the newbies are very lucky to have Dr. Jones (a REAL MD btw) and azskeptic helping us on the forum. Mayo clinic or Johns Hopkin residency is something I can only dream of at present. Finally, as a psych nurse, may I suggest you switching your Haldol to Haldol Dec to ensure compliance.
Have a nice day.

I think I smell a troll.....but I'll give the benefit of the doubt this once.
One of the reasons I chose Saba is because of the positive "can-do" attitude of the students and alumni I've talked to. I'm sometimes a pessimistic person, and I find such an positive environment empowering and helpful.
But you asked for negative stuff, here's an incomplete list:
Only two small 7-11 type grocery stores
No beaches
Only one gas station
Only one road
Silly sounding name (I know, the island is stuck with "saba"....my friends mispronounce it saww-bah or say-what)
No McDonalds
No Wal-Mart
Outrageous phone costs
Guppy water from cisterns
Cowboy showers
No real gym
No where to really play socccer/football/baseball
No big hardware stores, electronics stores, furniture stores, etc.
Mail takes a year and a day to come and go
Professor turnover (happens at all caribbean schools, I think)
Winair (i think you mentioned that one)
Small town type atmosphere - everyone knows your business and vice-versa
No high speed/wireless internet except in library (except for very expensive DSL which just came on line)
If you are not nice to the phone company guy, you might never get a phone line switched on
I'm sure if I thought harder I could add a lot more, I'm sure others could probably do better.
Maybe Saba does gloss over some of it's problems, in fact I'm sure they do. But I'd choose the positive, helpful atmosphere of Saba over the cut-throat and negative atmosphere of some other places any day of the week.

Dr. Pepper, not sure who you are, although you may know who I am. You may then also know that I'm on SGA. Yes, some stuff sucks, especially the gym situation, but I'm not sure why you're complaining on here rather than going to people who can do something about it, like Dr. Paton or admin, or even going to the SGA. Believe it or not we are working to get some changes made here on campus, including hounding those in charge back in the states. Also rest assured that you've got a group (including Dr. Paton, who's great at this - I've read his messages to home office) who will not just back off and take silence as an answer for the issues here on campus.
I wouldn't say any place is perfect at all. If anyone comes from this board thinking that they've found a "perfect" place then they're seriously delusional - even a US med school isn't perfect. If you want to rant, find me on campus, or actually state what it is you're so irked about.

This guy in the dorm left after the first day of class because he didn't like it here, so no, of course Saba isn't for everyone. If you don't like it here, Dr.Pepper, you should've packed up a long time ago. Why are you on this forum whining? You should be addressing your issues with SGA. We just had a dorm meeting addressing a whole bunch of issues that needed some attention (gym equipment being one of them); so go to your class rep and voice your opinion to him/her. If you don't actually attend Saba, stop trolling around, because you have to be on the island to know it.

Ok, westtxrn maybe i penetrated before i lubricated. But, I am not amused at your lingoistics. First, it shows a real sense of disrespect to your own patient population. That you would slam someone you don't know with a remark like that demonstrates a demeaning attitude toward psych patients and the problems they possess. Perhaps you should try and upgrade your skills and work in an area that is less subjective and a little more objective. You see, you're not the only health care person here and nursing school humor is truely not appropriate.

All discussions addressing the lack of freedom in this forum end on that, no Shauna? Then what is this forum for? Just to praise the Gardner people and say how marvelous is everything?
"If you want to rant, find me on campus, or actually state what it is you're so irked about."... this one could be the motto for the useless SGA. So the gym situation is the only thing that “irks” you? Give me a break! If it's a legitimate problem, then prospective students should be warned about what to expect, and current students should be made aware, and given the opportunity to do something about it. If nothing is done, well, you haven't lost anything, have you?

Dr. Pepper,
I would like to ask you when it was that it was stated that you were not allowed to post anything negative. Not one single time have I told you that you could not post your feelings on the board. I actually encouraged you to STATE what it is that has bothered you so much about the school, island, campus, people, etc, and instead you still stand back and launch attacks on the people on the message board. I’m still waiting to read what you’re upset about pertaining to the school, as yet all I have read is that you’re mad that noone is saying anything negative.
If you think I’m here to praise Gardner, think again. If you would like to hear my personal thoughts on individuals “higher up” at this school, I once again invite you to come find me, as you obviously know who I am. I am at a disadvantage in that I don’t know who you are, although I can narrow it down based on your posting history. I know I’m not alone in believing that if you’re going to take a stand, don’t attempt to do so anonymously. It shows a lack of courage and it appears that you are all talk and no action. You want something at this school changed? Do something about it. I am. You want people to post the negative issues here at the school? Then DO IT. I simply choose to do something about the problems rather than running to the forum to complain about them – that’s why you rarely see a post from me complaining about the school. I’m not even a member of the gym, so that is low on the list of what “irks” me. You want to know what “irks” me? Ask me. In the mean time, do what you came here to do and post.
The personal attacks on the people on this website WILL NOT be tolerated. This message board is meant to be a sounding board about issues to do with the school, not your personal issues or opinions about your fellow students. If you have a problem with me or with anyone else at this school, confront either myself or that person like a mature adult in a professional setting rather than flinging your (anonymous) attacks – the sarcastic tone within your posts are not appreciated. If there is one thing I have absolutely no patience for it is immaturity.
I never said, “Love it or leave it.” I simply asked that if this place is so horrible, why are you here? If Saba is such a horrible school, why are you staking your reputation as a physician on it?
Why do you continue to misread people’s posts? I have read several of your replies to other’s posts that imply things that were not said. And once again, why are you so afraid to reveal your identity?
And once again, noone is paid to post here. I get no benefits except to meet those students coming in that I spoke with on the board.

Maybe I can get this started honestly!
I am upset and concerned at the fact that Saba (Gardner) told us and continues to tell us that the starting class size is 45-50. When I have visited the island and verified that it shall be 75 for the January semester!
There are numerous issues with that:
1) I know the school is putting in the 75th computer in the testing center - so that is covered
2) Will the class size get ridiculously big
3) Can the small anatomy lab and each cadaver handle the class size
4) The dorm shall definitely not have enough space so many first-termers shall be placed off campus (eventhough the dorm is off - campus across the road from the school)
5) I realize that one does have the option to secure their own core clinical rotations, but if that is an issue - the school shall secure them for you. So, does the school plan on increasing its hospital affiliations in order to accomodate more students?
Whew... now - does anybody else have any comments, feedback, etc...
Wolf - I hope this got the discussion going as we use to have in the old days! :D

I agree with many things of what he said, but I differ in one: The computer lab situation is far from being good. Even if there are enough computers, the space is too small and overcrowded. Medical students sometimes cheat, didn't you know?
But he had the guts to say something! Meanwhile…
Why do you continue to misread people’s posts?
Exactly! Why do you usually, in your endless and always unsuccessful attempt to be popular, do not realize that I never bashed SUSOM? First of all, I'd like to thank Dr. Pepper for the "hooray":
Hooray for Saba University School of Medicine, David Fredrick and especially Researching Guy (MC)! Saba and maybe the whole Caribbean would sink into the ocean, if one day SUSOM disappears!
It makes me feel really special.
I would also like to say that SID is definitely NOT popular except maybe with the chickens in the cafeteria.
I thought Dr. Pepper was still here (third semester). I recall previous posts expressing some concerns about school, but he has never been too specific.
I encourage everyone to bring up specific points and support them. If you look around this forum, I don't think you will find any place where I've said that Saba (the school or the island) are perfect. Most all of my posts are positive because my experience here has been positive.
I can also remember only two times when I have edited a post and that was because the poster had violated terms of service by mentioning someone's name (one was a particularly heinous accusation). I simply "x'd" out the names.
I particularly dislike censorship. I feel that once a forum is censored it is worthless. I do believe that we should behave in a responsible and constructive way, but pretty much all subjects should be fair game.
Dr. Pepper, if you want to tell us what you feel about specifics, start the debate. I think it would be great. Just remember the ground rules.
BTW, I think the list already put forth by ducman is a pretty good start.
Who has more?

I like Ducman's list, it's a good start...and he's not even on the island yet! And regarding cheating in med school: There's no bell-curve (at least in first semester), so you can cheat all you want in the little computer room, but when it comes to the USMLE, you're just gonna get slaughtered. Bottom line is "don't cheat yourself." Size of computer room is at the bottom of MY list. Trying to get paid here for some propaganda work, however, is at the top
swingingislanddoc, i guess you haven't met me yet because i usually just come and go. The dorm is my little bubble...formerly the library, but it gets too cold there, so now it's the dorm. If you're ever in the gym or cafeteria, look for the china-man, there's not many of us on the island LOL

I think I was just standing right beside you this morning in the gazebo - was that you? I was ranting on and on about the pharm exam to my roommate and to anencephalic.
Maybe that was another "china man". :P

Honestly on these boards, I see people who I seriously doubt have maturity to be a physician. Computer lab size? Geez when I was on the island we had a few computers in the old "library". We had no air conditioning in most of the classrooms, no cafeteria, Guido's (let him rest in peace) gym was always smelly, overcrowded and the equipment was all rusted. Didn't bother the guy in the class ahead of me who was a regional level competative bodybuilder. And 99% of us graduated and went on to residency.
You're on the island for one reason. You didn't get into a US or Canadian school. Your job is to study hard and get ready to crush the USMLE. If you want paradise don't go to Saba. In fact don't go to Ross either. Unless things have changed there, they take 250 students in each class and flunk out 2/3-3/4's. Try AUC and wind up doing your cores in GB or Ireland. Even SGU "The Harvard" of the caribbean is no paradise. One of my friends was stabbed there by the friendly locals.
I am not a paid propagandist. I'm a Saba grad who is just finishing residency and will give you real honest answers. Does the school have problems? Of course it does, but if you keep your eye on the goal ..M.D. and a residency, it makes things much clearer. One of my professors at Saba, Steve Deschner who also taught at U Mass, put it best: "A caribbean school is a ticket to the big show..the USMLE". if you remember that little mantra, everything else becomes secondary
Finally, if you think basic sciences on the rock are hard, just WAIT until you start residency.

Thanks for the "wake up and smell the coffee" speech. I'm heading back to study Path.
