Does anyone know if having a passport is mandatory? Is a birth certificate and drvers license enough for SGU and entering the island ?

From the State Department:

ENTRY AND EXIT REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizens may enter Grenada with proof of U.S. citizenship, (a certified birth certificate, a Naturalization/Citizenship Certificate, or a valid or expired passport) and photo identification. U.S. citizen visitors who enter Grenada without one or more of these documents, even if admitted by local immigration officials, may encounter difficulties in boarding flights to return to the U.S. There is no visa requirement for stays of up to three months. There is an airport departure charge. For additional information concerning entry/exit requirements, travelers may contact the Embassy of Grenada, 1701 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20009, telephone (202) 265-2561, e-mail grenada@oas.org, or the Consulate of Grenada in New York.

However, I would recommend a passport, it just make things easier - less chance that the immigration officer changes the rules at whim.

if you lose your ID, you're going to have a bit of a problem at the US embassy; better to just get a passport - and make a photocopy in case of loss.

You need the passport because the Grenadian immigration will stamp their seal on it and that is how they know you are a student the next term when you come down. The school does not give out letters for every term for you to come down. The seal is what will be your proof that you are a current student at SGU.
