Carry-On Baggage/Articles
Each passenger is allowed one (1) piece of carry-on baggage, total weight 3 kilograms (6.5 pounds). These limitations are intended for your comfort and safety. All baggage must be completely stowed before the aircraft can depart from the gate.
Checked Luggage/Baggage
Baggage and carry-on articles will be carried within space and weight limitations of the aircraft.
Passengers are permitted, free of charge, 20 kilograms (44 pounds) of total checked baggage.
Excess baggage will be accepted if space permits at an additional weight charge for the excess baggage.
<>Excess baggage charges are according to the destination and are calculated at 2% of the one-way fare.

So what about laptops? Should we ship them down with our last batch of stuff we ship to the school before arriving?

Personally, I would carry it with me.
Electronic Equipment Permitted During Flight
Personal Digital Assistants, Electronic Books and Laptop computers may be used during flight. These items must not be used during take-offs and landings.

Nothing is said whether or not the laptop counts as your carryon, but from experience, most airlines make exceptions to laptops. They count as a personal item, thus are allowed including a small carryon. Contact winair for confirmation.

DEFINITELY carry your laptop with you!! Winair really isn't that strict about the carry-ons - I carry on my backpack and my monstrous laptop case - it's cramped in my seat, but as long as I'm willing to suffer it, they're willing to let me. If there's room they'll sometimes take larger carry ons and put them in the luggage hold (which is friggin tiny - of course the whole plane is tiny, you have to bend over to get to your seats - you'll see what I mean...)
I also learned that if you're flying US Airways (which has an affiliation with Winair) you can check you luggage all the way through to Saba, AND you can check 70lbs. That's what I'm doing this time (since I always go US Air anyway), allowing me to carry about 30 lbs more luggage than I realized I could before. WOOOO HOOO! :P
Also be aware that when there are a bunch of students coming back all at once (like there will be for those of us getting there on the weekend) they luggage doesn't always come that day because there is so much. Plan to have a few necessities in your carry on. Also bring a snack bar or two with you just in case...

It does matter - but let me just say that "that's the way I do it!"
Now, if you're arriving with a million other people all at one time (exaggeration, of course - a million people wouldn't fit on Saba...) then they might take some issues with you having a bunch of stuff. But if you have a laptop case and a backpack they usually don't say a word (ladies, you can also lug a purse with you if you so desire - just keep up with all of your bags).

Do you know how many times I've bruised my hips because I've had to hold up one of their legs (and rest my elbow on my hip because the leg was so heavy) while they have their cellulitis wound-dressings changed. Do you know how many times I've had to turn those type of pts and how many times I've left my ovaries lying in the floor when we've scooted them up in bed. I would check with the airline you intend on flying with, but everyone I've heard from was allowed to check 2 bags/boxes with a 70max each bag.
I wonder how good shipping is from St. Maarten to Saba. Also, I wonder if it would be cheaper to ship from the U.S. or St. Maarten.

When I moved from the States to St. Maarten I was allowed two checked bags at 70lbs a piece on Delta airlines. I know the same is true for American and U.S. Airways as well. Check it out!
Good luck!
ducman
09-08-2004, 09:56 AM
That is correct - you shall be allowed two checked in bags (each weighing 70 lbs) on most flights to St. Maarten. HOWEVER, Winair shall only allow ONE bag weighing 40-50 lbs... you shall have to pay extra for the second bag and it shall arrive on Saba on a later flight.
That is why they make sure to inform you to pack that first bag with everything you need to be able to get by for 24 horus (until the second bag arrives)

(It was three in the morning and I was just falling asleep- maybe it was a really odd, yet completely explainable, Freudian dream.... just curious  ). This would really hamper my plans of flying down to the island in January- it's the only non-stop flight I found in the area :?

Report: US Airways bankruptcy 1 month away, union says
NEW YORK (Reuters) — Investment bankers working for US Airways Group's pilots union said the No. 7 U.S. airline could seek bankruptcy protection by mid-September if it does not get needed cost cuts, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
Bill Pollock, chairman of the Air Line Pilots Association union's group at the Arlington, Va.-based carrier, said in a letter that the union's leadership "does not disagree in principal (sic) with the conclusions" reached by the union's banker, Glanzer & Co., the newspaper said.
"The reality of our financial situation speaks for itself," the letter said.
The airline did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
The 26-page report, dated July 14 and released this week to 3,400 ALPA members, according to the newspaper, essentially confirms US Airways' own wary outlook for its future.
The report said the carrier's creditors have already put claims on its cash to minimize losses if US Airways collapses, the newspaper said, and that US Airways "might be worth more dead than alive to groups other than the employees" because other airlines might use its assets more profitably.
Last month, US Airways Chief Executive Bruce Lakefield told employees that if the carrier fails to cut costs, it "could just run out of steam sometime next year."
US Airways lowered its cost structure during its eight months in bankruptcy protection in 2002 and 2003. But soaring fuel prices and growing market share among discount carriers have made it difficult for the carrier to succeed.
As part of its drive to cut costs by $1.5 billion, US Airways has said it needs about $800 million of labor concessions.
This includes $295 million from pilots, $263 million from mechanics and fleet service workers, $122 million from reservation agents and passenger service and ticket counter employees and $116 million from flight attendants.
Pilots have offered to take pay cuts of 12.5% and work more hours through 2008. Flight attendants have said they would discuss concessions.
The carrier recently said it would discontinue Pittsburgh as a flight hub. On Thursday it said it would halt non-stop service from that city on 20 routes, but maintain service to more than 50 markets.
US Airways shares fell 9 cents to $2.54 on Thursday. They began the year at $6.22.

Bankruptcy does not mean the airline is shutting its doors - it means that it is asking assistance from the court system to be allowed to restructure its debt structure without having creditors hounding at its doors.
The airline shall continue to operate - you may just get your favorite peanuts! :D

That's usually the case. The press and U.S. Airways are talking like they really might close the doors this time, since they already got a loan from the federal gov't in the 100s of millions of dollars a year or two ago. It all depends on if the U.S. gov't thinks that U.S. Airways is better off receiving more subsidies like that, or if it would be better to let the company die and it's facilities taken over by another airline at the risk of creating a monopoly situation.
Hopefully they won't close the doors, since more competition in the marketplace is good for us consumers. :D

Hey future,
If you're flying US Airways and check through, you do not have to claim your baggage until you arrive on Saba. Keep in mind your baggage may not arrive with you, but later - that's fine, someone from the school will pick it up and bring it to campus if you can't get to it first.
Flying back to the states, once you get back on US soil you'll have to recheck your luggage in customs.

I don't know of anyone who has had their luggage lost. I might arrive when you do, it might arrive two days later - it's all up in the air. THe WinAir planes only hold so much stuff as they are little. Eventually it comes though, unless your other carrier coming to SXM loses it.

From http://www.seasaba.com/MainPages/TravelTips.htm
Often times, Winair does not check the weight of your bags. If they do and determine your bags are over the allowance, you may need to remind the St. Maarten Winair representative of the 10kg allowance for dive equipment. If your luggage is still determined to be overweight, you will need to pay for the extra poundage in another line and then re-check in. The official rate is $1.20/kg. Traveling from Saba to St. Maarten does not impose overweight charges as long as you have a normal amount of luggage (2 bags per person).
Interline Baggage Agreements...At this writing, USAir, Continental, KLM, Air France have interline baggage agreements with Winair. If traveling on these airlines, you may check your luggage through to Saba at your gateway city. The airport code for Saba is "SAB". These agreements regularly change but it never hurts to ask when you're checking your bags to same time and inconvenience when you land in St. Maarten. In order to take advantage of this check-in process, you must have a ticket for same-day travel to Saba. The reverse is true when departing Saba.

Maybe one of the best steaks I've ever eaten. Great atmosphere and service. If you come in on the Edge, drop by Pop's and see if they have the Lobster roll. Very good. Burgers at Tropics. Pizza at Saba's Treasure. Ribs at Swinging Doors. Chicken at Scout's. The list goes on.
Oh yeah! Don't forget the Gate House. Really good food and service. Y2K is good as well.
Better stop here.
