View Full Version : Any other newbies from Florida that went through Hurricane C
Hey all,
Just wondering if there were any other fellow soon to be 1st semester students or anyone else here that's from Florida that went through Hurricane Charley. Not a fun experience to say the least especially when you go a week with out electricity in Florida's humidity  Glad to be one of the lucky ones that only had to go through that. Those poor people in southwest Florida are only now starting to get real help with food, supplies and rebuilding. Really puts things in perspective. Anyway hope anyone else who's gone through this came out ok.

I feel your pain... I was without phone for 1 week, power for 2 weeks and starbucks for 3 weeks when hurricane Fran hit North Carolina. And we were 300 miles inland in Chapel Hill!
I was a paramedic and had to work that night... It was crazy... We were driving to the hospital and I saw a frickin' tree fly by in front of us!!! I mean, it was just like that scene in "Tornado" where Helen Hunt looks at Bill Paxton and goes, "Cow." I looked at my partner and went, "Tree." It was one of those "funny but not funny moments."
At the height of the storm, we actually shut down 911 and quit responding to calls since it was too dangerous for us to respond. At one point the phones went out and even if you wanted to call 911 you couldn't. You called 911 and got the "doo-dee-doo... we're sorry the number you are calling, 9 - 1 - 1, is not in service... please check your number and call again..."
We had a firefighter that was decapitated by a tree... very sad... I went to a cardiac arrest that the deceased actually had to stay for 3 days in his family's home becuase there was no one to come pick him up... sad...

what's really bad is that I got here for a reunion and got a hurricane instead! I got to Orlando thursday and the next night I was taping up my sister's windows!
My parents didn't have electric until this past saturday and they live in Winter Park with all those 50 year old oak trees that came down. The house across from them had a tree fall on and flatten their car (I'll post pics when I get back)
Winter Park was one of the worst hit areas in central fl. I haven't seen the damage there except on the news but in my neighborhood there are also huge trees and the way they fell and pulled the grass and ground around them up like some giant kid that knocked down their toys  A really surreal thing to see everyday.
Ditch Dr definatly got to give you credit for being one of the people working the front lines in a hurricane. They hardley ever report the stories of people like the fireman and the family with the deceased family member so most people never really know how bad the hurricane really was. In one of the towns where Charley first hit some people that had been missing in the trailer parks were later found dead in the nearby lakes. There are just to many sad stories. I'm glad me and my friends only had to deal with the inconvienice of no A/C and electricity for a week.
I hope no one's offended from this kinda downer thread but I just needed an outlet and to hear from other people that went through the same thing.
