Would there be any difficulty in bringing knives to the island?

Um, have you been on a plane lately?

With the current state of security, I would say no. After all, I am sure all bags go through a detector/x-ray machine of some sort, and they would be seen clear as day by customs officials.

However, if you really wanna bring your knives (which I assume are for cooking) contact your airline - find out for sure.

on most airlines, you can carry knives and sharp objects in your luggage that gets put underneath the plane. i just came home with american airlines and i had some sharps but they were wrapped and in my luggage where noone had access to them. i have done it plenty of times. also, if you do carry such things like knives, you can tell the people when you check you baggage just so they know.

You can even take them with you as carry-on as long as you declare them, and give them to the security people, who secure them and then give them to you afterwards. We had a wine corkscrew that they did that with. They took it from us, held it, then gave it to us after the flight.

Just declare everything and tell people about it. Best bet is to put them in the checked luggage. If they are for cooking, I suggest bringing them... how I miss my Wustoffs... sigh... You can't really find good knives at a respectable price here. If it is like a collection of knives, then I would suggest letting a friend look after them until you get back if that's possible... Less hassle... but that is just me...

I am one of them backwoods folks that always carries a pocket knife. you will have no problem if you put it in your checked baggage but DO NOT TRY to take it on the plane with you, as carry on in your pocket or in your carryon bags. I have brougt down several hunting and camping knives that i use as part of my diving and fishing gear.

I had to throw away a very expensive gerber knive awhile back when i was flying in the U.S. they would not let me on the plane with it, so put it in the checked baggage

That really sucks... Since I was a paramedic in rural NC, I have a lot a redneck knife wielding, gun toting buddies... ok, so I'm a knife weilding, gun toting redneck, too...

....anyway, I guess it depends on the minimum wage dude at the x-ray machine as far as letting the flight crew hold the knife until after the flight. I had a buddy that did that when he accidentally left his spiderco clipped to his pants... it was one of the older models that they don't make anymore... I think it was a silver 4" "police" 1/2 serrated... anyway he pitched a fit and they just gave the knife to the flight crew to hold for the flight...

I'm not saying you should do this, but if you forget and have your knife on you then you shouldn't have to throw away your knife... that just sucks... just mean...

I "accidentally" left my Emmerson Specwar CQC-7 folder in my jeans one day going through the airport as I was about to depart for a flight from Honolulu...I ended up ditching it in a ceramic planter near the X ray security station. When I returned a week later, much to my surprise, it was still there (thanks to the lazy "cleaning" folk!).

No. It was actually a bribe that necessitated some old Carpenters' records, a Three Dog Night 8-track, and a can of beans. And some duct tape.
