Hi all,

I'm halfway to Dominica now...currently staying overnight in Puerto Rico. Anyways, i flew out of Toronto Canada on American Airlines/American Eagle, and the verdict on how much baggage I could bring was this... one carry on less than 40lbs (doesn't include having a laptop) and checked items totaling 70 lbs. That's right….I was very very close to bringing two 70 lbs (that's 140 lbs total) of checked luggage.

I've heard different luggage stories from ticket agents, AA staff and other Ross students (some say two 50 lbs checked items, others say two 70lbs and a few say one 70 lbs checked luggage weight).

According to the AA ticket agent, most international flights are allowed two checked bags of a maximum of 70 each. But Dominica has its own guidelines for incoming baggage. From what I understand (as far as my case goes, anybody bringing more than 70 lbs will not know about this little rule until they arrive to the airport just before Dominica. And anything over that 70lbs limit will have to be sent back to your city of origin.

I’d love to hear about what other Ross students starting this sept have discovered about luggage restrictions.

I am going to ship the rest of my stuff by barrel.

Good luck getting here.

Btw, non-US students beware....US customs agents can be morons.

Salsabil:

Not sure whether the luggage restriction is really the fault of Dominica or American Eagle. Hope your luggage arrives with you at Mellvill hall.

If I'm interpreting the signs at the Melville Hall Airport correctly, then its a Dominican problem. Apparently, there is an embargo which restricts checked luggage to 70 lbs and carry on to 40 lbs.

You can possibly get away with bringing 140 lb (2 bags with 70 lb.) TO Dominica if the airline agent from where you're departing doesn't notice this. I have gone to Dominica and back 4 times now, and all 4 times I've brought 140 lb to Dominica since the agents in Dallas haven't noticed this (I guess I'm lucky).

But don't expect them to allow you to take 140 lbs back FROM Dominica (even 70 lbs. 1 oz too much).

circa 1998-1999...

I brought down two bags via AA from Hartford CT to Dominica via San Juan. Each one weighed about 90lbs. The agent couldn't figure out how much to charge for the overage and was unaware of wt. limits on the flight. She finally gave up and just sent me to the gate. no charges. no problems.

Just remember if you go over the limit with your baggage 1. Your luggage may not make the plane to Dominica or 2. Someone else will not get their bags. When I came back after mini 1 there was a girl with 5 bags and my roomate and my luggage didn't make it. It took 2 days to get it. Then they dropped it off at the texaco station near portsmouth.

Ok,,
Just becuase some people got lucky it doesnt mean they are right.
No is not Dominica, is AA. The airplanes that comes down is really small, smaller then the ones they use for other island. It doesnt matter where you buy your ticket. What it matter is the person attending you in P.R.
Now usually is 70 pounds per bag and almost every flight, the people working on AA knows this so is they dont check or they dont read their monitor they will never know... you will understand when you see the airplane. Everytime I leave or come here someone has to empty their bags.

so remember,
when your luggage is left at San Juan,
leaving you stranded without them for days
because they couldn't fit it on the airplane to DOM
thank those students who brought more than two bags, each over 70 lbs.
Simply because they got away with it.
They got theirs, so they don't care what happens to the rest of you.

And so begins the grande olde Ross tradition of
"I got mine, screw everybody else."

Wow - talk about over dramatizing things... everyone gets their luggage... eventually. If you travel at all, you should just learn to plan ahead for this kind of thing and deal with it. Or just stay home.

Coming here maybe,, sometimes they ask you to take out stuff out of your bags.. this is more towards the class beggins
If you are getting out of here,, like me tomorrow, good luck,,
they for sure will tell you NOPE take it out or leave it.. like 2 friends of mine. One in my flight had to leave few books actually he sold it to a fellow student and the other give the luggage to a driver to take it back home, meaning apartment in dominica..[/code]

In my case im flying down to dominica but even though my ticketing is through American Airlines, my connecting flight is through liat. So, heres the thing- ive been told that since my ticketing is thru AA, they will let me get away with 70 lbs total for checked in luggage and the carry on luggage allowance. Liat is telling me that they only allow 40 lbs total for checked in and NO carry on luggage whatsoever. Im not sure who to believe and the people at liat are not easy to communicate with. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

lol u concur? I have had my luggage left 2 out of 3 trips to Dominica. I was prepared. If the airline did their jobs and only allowed the correct amount of luggage there wouldn't be any problems. For all the incoming 1st semester I suggest carrying atleast a day or 2 worth of clothes in a carry on bag.

The weight limit for check in baggage is combined weight of 70lbs. If you have 2 check-in luggage they have to equal 70lbs together. The weight limit is not as strict arriving in Dominica, but leaving the island is a different story. If you are a little over - they will not allow you to check your bags in. There are students that had to dump some of their stuff when I was at the airport coming back to the states.

I was one of them.
I had to give away a few things getting out.. :-(
Nothing important at least i was only 75 pounds.. so 5 pounds over the limitid.

l If the airline did their jobs and only allowed the correct amount of luggage there wouldn't be any problems.

Exactly... IF they did their job correctly... but they don't, so as you said "be prepared" and everyone else stop acting like you died because you had to wait for your luggage.... basically we could sit here all day and talk about IF they didn't allow too much luggage, IF they had more flights, IF, IF, IF, IF - but talking about it and crying about it doesn't fix it so just BE PREPARED... :D
