I have asked this but couldn't find the post how long of an ethernet cable do we need for the dorms from wall to laptop?

MDTOB recommends 10 feet. But if u want ur laptop on ur bed, then i guess a little longer woldn't hurt. Even then, i think 10 feet is plenty, if u take a look at the pics of RH rooms in SMU website.

10 is a good length, i got a 25 becuz i sometimes i want to read sitting on my bed instead of at my desk and wireless isnt for the rooms (only pool area, study room and front area)

if we have wireless built-in, do we still need an ethernet cable? i was under the impression the dorm and campus is wireless.

You are right, but MDTOB, AmericanIMG had said it only works great in some places... many places including our dorm rooms in RH do not work as great as in study lounge, etc
That's why we need cat5 cable.

cat5 is way faster then wireless, i use cat5 whenever i can...those powerpoints are big

Hello,
The campus is totally wireles. The R.H is not, because of the display. All rooms have cat 5 hardwire plugs, more reliable than the wireless and faster.
10ft is good length, 25 for your bed.

what exactly is cat5, is it that cord where the two ends look like the phone cords you plug into phone jacks, except that they are wider?
