I am listening to Devry stock conference call.
The following things will be done this year acording to the President.
1-Two new lecture halls to be built each seeating 500 students. I guess class sizes will be increased.
2-Domitory to be built for 350 students.
3-Seach for new President of Ross University.

increasing class size will decrease the quality of learning.
luckily i won't be affected by this in the next 16 months.
dorms are a great idea though. they should let incoming students live there for a semester while they search for housing.

I think it should be the other way around. People that have been here longer should get them first. But, thats a long way down the road and none of us will be around here by that time.

Dorms are a great idea. However I fear that rather it be like in the States where tuition includes dorm fees, Ross will ask a pretty price for them. It's a shame too. I would love to see Ross use its power for once and stick it to the blood sucking, impolite Dominicans. Mabye they need to realize that asking $700 U.S. for cockroach infested dumps is criminal. I would like to see Ross build a coin operated laundry mat. But oh no, that would take more money away from the greedy criminals here.

i think the greedy criminals are mainly the ross administration be it on or off the roc
amongst the dominicans are people trying to take advantage of the situation and then u have the higher "rossers " trying to swindle the rossies at every chance they get.(bmsi med prep garbage)
think about how much the poeple who work at the univ (librarians comp techs etc) make in comparison to personel in the states?and how much the skool is saving , y would they care if the students are unhappy and getting robbed and cheated? !!
and the overpriced virtually useless professors?!!!
yes eSTAR eSTAR eSTAR that for our records!!
no offense meant ..just my opnion

I suspect the new dormitory Devry claims for Ross University will be PBH enhanced with some new wood and tin. PBH is now owned by Ross and they are supposedly "upgrading" it. I have dealt with power outage, no water pressure, a green pool, and no cleaning service since this nobel upgrading has begun. Thanks Ross!

It is true about the dorms and the lecture hall. I attended a group discussion at the beginning of the semester with some lady that came down to represent Devry and she provided us with some sketches of some dorm layouts and asked us to contribute some information about what was most important. Of course we mentioned a cafeteria on campus as number one.

While I don't know about the new lecture halls
i do know that they bought half of of PBH already,, the new office of the PBH has moved to the other side...
While I was there this week the story that I got was that the new dorm is out of the question, since the locals raised too much of a fuss. I was repeatedly told that the new dorm was "put on a permanent hold". PBH was busy doing some upgrades...sanding, hammering, plastering, changing a/c units. The other thing I noticed was that PBH was pushing students out after only one night, encouraging them to either get an apartment or sign up for a unit there.

Ross owns the apartments that are being renovated at PBH, so in other words it has not been put on hold, it is moving forward.

Dru:
Did you get any feedback on the cafeteria that his been out of operation for almost a year and that was originally promised to open again six months ago. My son says there has been no activity for six months. Hopefully you had a goos trip and it will be you l;as t one to Dominica.
I did not hear anything re. the cafeteria, but that's not to say it won't happen. When I say the dorms are put on hold I am referring to new construction rather than the renovation of the PBH. I hope that I do get to return to Dominica, as it is one of my favorite islands (regardless of the negative tripe). It happens to be one of the five top diving spots in the world, and as long as I have the urge to submerge, I will always long to return.

Dominica is great, some places to definantly visit if you are of the nature going type.
Emerald pools and the whole Mon Tres Pitons park (i probably murdered that spelling).
Trafalgar falls- extremely short little hike to two beautiful falls that are from seperate rivers. There is also a hot springs there.
Titou Gorge- amazingly pretty, a great swim up to a small waterfall in a narrow gorge, if you are the claustrophobic type don't go. AFter you freeze in the freshwater head down to the hotwater springs in the river right near by.
Boiling lake- I haven't gone but i am told it is a hard hike but worth the effort
Bense pools- great natural slide down a waterfall into pristine pools. Has ledges about 20 feet high that you can do flips and such off of into the pool.
Unnamed cliffs on the ocean- take the 2nd concrete road up to the left on the road from portsmouth heading toward the airport. Go to the 2nd town, the name of escapes me right now. Anyways, ask where the old fisherman's warf is. Beautiful area, grassy area leads up to some cliffs that you can jump off which range from 20 feet to 50 feet. A note of caution, this is for strong swimmers only as you have to swim against the tide to get back to shore.
Sunset bay- best place to eat on the island, run by a great belgium family. Roger is the chef and if you make friends with him he will pull the rum out and drink with you. Great Place
Fort Young- expensive but decent quality
Coco Rico's - decent food, decent prices, make sure to visit the deli down below for a selection of french hams, bacon, chesses, wines, and liqours of all sorts.
Cabrits dive shop- mnost reasonable diving on the island, nice group of people also. Diving on the north end of the island = lots of coral, sponges, and fans. Some of them are pretty extreme. The south end of the island is more expensive, coral isn't as good as far as i have seen but i haven't dove there near as much. Much better walls though
Champagne springs- lots of fish, the ground gases volcanic gas (terrible sentence) looks like champagne bubbles. A lot of fun to snorkel.
Scott's Head. One side you have the atlantic, other side the caribbean. The caribbean side is much better snorkeling/diving but not much to see snorkeling.
Mon Bruce-- is the large hill overlooking roseau. Go up there to get an amazing panoramic view plus you can see the remenants of buildings after some of the various hurricanes. The presidents office is up there as is the police training school.
Botanical gardens in roseau- get to see some flora fauna, and parrots that might be hard to see otherwise plus the bamboo house. All in all very nice.
Well that is far from a comprehensive list, there is soooo much more to see but all those places have been good to me. If i there is more interest I can think up more places to have a good time in dominica.
peace,
zedpol
p.s. sorry for any grammatical or spelling errors. There is a very real possibility some of those sentences aren't going to make sense, but i am willing to live with that.
A note on Coco Rico...great French cooking, but they are only open for breakfast and lunch...NOT for evening meals.
Le Robe has great Creole dishes and very cozy. (stone's throw from Fort Young)

Zedpol covered at lot of ground, but I can't help but add a few...
Syndicate Falls: easy to moderate hike with a large waterfall you can walk right up to. Very nice to look at, but you can't go swimming up there
Mt. Diablotine hike: The big trail takes 6 hrs total, so you have to get there by 1030 to start the hike to get back before dark.
There's a trail that you're supposed to be able to see the national parrot on up there, but the parrot is there mainly in the early am and late pm. There's a nice walke through the woods up there, though-really flat, nice trail with seom pretty amazing trees.
Purple Turtle Beach: Very close to school on the isthmus between Cabrits and land. Sandy bottom beach with very gradual inc. depth. Nice place to take kids and there's the Purple Turtle bar there too.
Cabrits: Has Fort Shirley and some other nice trails back there. Nice little half day type of trip if you're looking for a little break.
Chaudriere Pool: We actually found this when we were looking for Benze Pool (the locals kept on directing us to Benze school because they couldn't understand us). Involves a little river crossing, but well worth it. Same concept at Benze pool except the current is a bit faster-but still very close and nice.
Sari Sari Waterfalls: By far one of my favorite falls to go to. Moderate to challenging hike but very rewarding with a nice swim in the falls. Very very nice-but the guides probably don't take the cruise ship people and run of the mill tourists there because the hike is a bit of a work out.
RoSTI: This is the Rosalie Sea Turtle Initiative. Turtles are currently not in season, but you can spend a night in the Rosalie area and is there's a turlte laying/hatching, they'll call you up and you can go down to the beach with them and watch. The beach is on the Atlantic side that looks very different from the Carribean side and it is very beautiful. The locals over ther were very nice to me when I went over there and you don't feel like you're really in Dominica anymore over there. If there aren't turtles to look at, you will find some really nice safe mountain hiking a nice marine biologist to sit and chat with.
okaaayyy...there's a bunch of other stuff to do here, but it's almost midnight, so I'm going to bed because I'm swimming down at Layou River tomorrow. I'll let you all know how that goes
Cheers,
Vanessa

I thought I should tell you all about a new discovery of mine...
Typically, we're charged a site fee to enter these national parks and it costs 5ec or 2usd. All Ross students are required to have visas for Dominica, so we are technically Dominicans. In other words, we don't really get charged the entrance fee to all these parks because we're pseudo-citizens. I didn't have to bring my passport, they just took a real close look at my Ross ID and waved me through. I guess you could pay if you want to, because it is a national park.

If you go on th tram during orientation, they have it uber-discounted. Never have gone myself.
Went with some new students to Layou River today for some freshwater swimming. It was a pretty nice swimming place, no bugs, should have brought a picnic basket.

I've spent the past few days of my break enjoying this beautiful island. I have to second what the folks said above about Benze/Chaudriere Pool. My parents and I found it by following a sign off the main road, and it's awesome. Deep crystal clear fresh water and a big 15/20 foot rock ledge to jump from. We had the whole river to ourselves for the whole time. One of my favorite places so far. Also the seaside village of Calibishie was really nice. Got some great fish from a man named Steve.
