Hello to all SMU students and especially everyone entering this fall semester. I am planning a little get together to introduce ourselves before the beginnng of classes. I want to invite everybody to a BBQ. We're thinking of having it on Saturday the 28th by the pool at the Resident Hall starting around 4:00. I think most everyone will be on the island by then, but this time and date is flexible so if there are enough that would rather it be on Sunday then just post your concerns.
This will be a great time to have some fun and meet everyone. Just bring some meat to throw on the grill and come dressed for the pool. We can't openly have alcohol at the pool but if you want to bring some beverages the beach is only a stones throw away.
This is just an idea right now so nothing is set....so anyone with suggestions please feel free to comment.
PS: Don't forget to bring something to cook and wear your swimsuit.

hey,
Mshehorn with a great idea. Might as well take advantage of our beautiful pool. Maybe someone on the island can bring a frisbee, or a football or anything for some physical activities, and may if someone have a cooler for some sodas  would be great since us newbies can't really bring one. :D Hope to see everyone there.

Great Idea!
I'll be there on the 26th so anything therafter is fine with me.
I, like probably all of you am nervous about being so far away from home for so long. I know its going to be a great experience for all of us but the first few weeks will be the most difficult. That is probably why we have to make many friends early on.
I look forward to meeting all of you!

:D Thanks for the response...I see most of the usuals have chimed in. So far we have like a dozen definately coming. We want everyone there so make it a well known thing. I'd like to get people there around four to swim and hang out around the pool. Then we'll start cooking around 5:00.
Alright, well I'm gonna need some help if this thing is going to be a success. AmericanIMG you've been most helpful.....but some of us may want to go out after the BBQ. Since WE all have to get up and go to orientation on Mon, I think it would be better to have it on Sat. We would still appreciate any imput you have to give. sorry
1) Often times you can get a good deal at the grocery store on meat. In the meat section there is a place that says choose five items from here for $20. Its a good deal. So take some friends with you and rake together 20 bucks. You can get several chicken breasts, hamburger meat, and plenty of hot dogs. That'd be my suggestion unless your Mr. Hummer up there and can afford to buy us all ribeyes. I'll cook it for you Charlottenian if you bring one for me. haha.
2) :? If anyone has the spare dough and or time....could someone bring a bag of chips and maybe some soda? If we get a lot of people we'll ask for donations to cover.
3)Q brought up the point of an ice chest (cooler)....If anyone knows of someone on the island that could help us with this it would sure be appreciated. Does anyone know if the RH has an ice machine? :?:
4)Mshah mentioned music. That is a great idea and it can't be a party without music. Loudest laptop wins unless someone has a real stereo. Or even some speaker...we could always hook the comp up to speakers.
5)Last of all....whoever gets to the RH first should put up a sign inviting everyone to join in. I think we'll all have a great time and we can familiarize ourselves with each other. The faster we all make friends the faster and better our study groups will be.
PS: there is like 2-3 clubs on SMB....my preference is the next level behind the aqua lounge.
PSS: Don't be embarrased to use the pool. Like QNguyen said, we might as well take advantage of our beautiful pool. 8)

Hey-
Just an idea but why doesn't everyone bring their "meat" or meat substitute along with one other communal item. That way we don't all have to bring our own chips, soda, and etc. I'm sure since the semester is just starting a bag of chips or some sodas will not put someone out too much yet...since we couldn't possibly have spent all our loan money yet.

The Residence Hall is governed by policies, one being that "you can't just invite anybody" to attend a BBQ at the Residence Hall, particularly when you invite all students, which can amount to 300-400. A barbecue is scheduled for next Monday for all new students and their families plus faculty. That is officially sanctioned by the St. Matthew;s Administration.

Sorry,
The Residence Hall is not a public park to have parties where you invite the entire student body to. You can go to the public beach for that.
As part of Orientation Day, newly arriving students and their families are invited to a BBQ at the RH at 6:30pm. This is sanctioned by SMU and it's administration.
I invite you all to keep the vision that you had when you first learned that you were to be entering the field of medicine,
Dr. Heller

Hey guys and girls,
The BBQ sounds fun, but whoever is there first should check with Administration, to make sure it's all ok first.

Hello,
The BBQ is a great idea but it should be organized in a correct way. It has to be only for RH students and not for the whole school.
When people hear that there might be free food, they will show up, whoever they are.
The RH is an academic facility and we cannot have outsiders for security and insurrance reasons. I am sure you understand.
Whoever is trying to get this thing going, should come to see me in the executive management office on the first floor. We will then organize it and make sure it is a successful starting for you all.
Thank you for your understanding
Sebastien

I am sorry for any confusion we may have caused. I can't take all the responsibility here though. There were a few of us that thought it would be a good idea. No one knew that we were having a school sponsored BBQ monday after school, (that would have been nice to know). And parents are invited? Not that I knew of. There is a very limited number of people that actually write in on this forum so I was expecting between 10-20 people to show up. If more than that happen to want to hang out, then we can just walk to the beach. We just thought that it would be a nice way to meet each other. If you'll notice it says to bring your own food to cook so Mr. Guilbard you are the only one that might get some BBQ for free. Other than that there is no free food. Again we are very sorry for not using the proper guidelines and mechanisms for having a get together. And, trying not to sound rude in anyway, six days before classes start is not the time to check the forum and start answering questions. I know you all have been extremely busy but JP is the only one that has provided official answers from the school.
Thank you for your responses, I think we have an excellent entering class and i look forward to meeting everyone however it may be.

Count me in! I'll bring a bunch of friends I met on the island and some upper classmen (LADIES!!!). I can get a great deal on keggers on the island because i met the owner of Big Daddy's and have gone golfing with him. I think that there was a vote at the residence hall last semester that concluded that anyone enrolled at SMU can be in the residence hall with a guest or two, but i can't remember. anyways, see you there. Hopefully this will be a bash!!

Hey there,
Don't get me wrong, I think the BBQ is an excellent idea. Let's just speak about it and make sure it goes well.
