San Juan has a pretty good reputation for losing luggage. We know of people who have had their luggage misplaced and returned about 1-2 weeks later, have had their luggage lost for good, and others who didn't have any problems. There were people in my hubby's class who experienced each of these incidences on their way here...some of them really had a hard time :( . Would you be able to pack some of the books in a backpack and bring it has a carry on? I know the books get heavy but at least that way you know you will have some of them in case something does go wrong (but hopefully it won't...haven't heard any problems in a while so that is good!).

I have flown threw Puerto Rico 4 times in the last 8 monthes for work, vacation, visiting family ect... and have never had a problem with lost luggage.

However I agree with wifeofdr2b, your best bet would be to pack your books in your backback for 2 reasons:

1) Just in case they do get lost your safe

and

2) It will free up about 25 lbs in your suitcase. Just enough room for an Xbox, a few Xbox game, and that cable box you that you were thinking of buying on ebay for $45 so you wouldn't have to spend $200 to buy one off a 5th semester student and your collection of CD's and DVD's.

Good luck and happy flying!

Another option might be to ship your books down in a box. We just had my parents mail down the books through four star cargo. I can't remeber how much it cost, but it freed up room in suitcases and we didn't have to worry about lugging around books as carryons.

Of course, with that option there is still the chance that the books may get lost in the mail.

It just depends on how much stuff you have to bring down here!

Good Luck!

Beach Bum too lazy to do it himself? Maybe his wife's mommy and daddy could take medical school for him, too.....

On a serious note, shipping is usually a much better option. If you carry your books (like I did) and they are more than the alotted weight (~70lbs depending on the airline-- which sounds like a lot, but isn't when your bags are stuffed full of books) then it is mucho expensive.... >$100, for when I flew anyway.... I know I got ripped, but I didn't want to unpack all that crap in the airport at the time....

It should cost like ~30-50 bucks w/ intermar depending on the weight and all.

You are allowed two carry on pieces with AA. They are each allowed to weigh 40lbs. However, they have never once checked how much my carry on weighed. The only downside to it is that it ends up to be really really heavy!!! My back hurt the next day from lugging all my books around!
