I just called American Airlines and they told me two checked bags 70 pounds each bag, does this sound correct?

Not to dominica; that is the general international limits. TO Dominica you are only allowed up to 2 bags weighing a total of 70lbs. They are pretty strick on it now too.

In the past when i was going to Dominica, from San Juan, they would let me check two bags and each can weigh up to 70 lbs. However, when coming back from dominica, you can have two bags that can't weigh more than 70 lbs combined...but last time i was there was two semesters ago so maybe they changed teh rules up.

When i first came here last september i brought 2 bags at 70lbs each, but now i have heard that they are very strict about it. Now when i go home and come back i make sure it is only 70lbs total.
As long as you dont check your bags at San Juan, you can bring two (2) 70lbs bags. So, if your flying AA straight through, your fine. But, if you switch carriers at San Juan, you'll only be allowed one (1) 70lbs bag to Dominica (ie. with Carribean Star, Liat, etc.).
So, the trick is not to switch carriers at San Juan.

or not to layover in san juan because american wont take 2 bags over 70lbs if you check in san juan
The American Airline limitations are:
One or two checked bags with a TOTAL of 70 pounds. (found out 8/17 that ATA limit is only 50 pounds)
One carry-on bag for a TOTAL of 35 pounds
One SMALL PERSONAL BAG (lap top bag, purse, or small backpack) with no weight limitation
EXCEDING THESE LIMITATIONS CREATES THE PROBLEM OF LUGGAGE BEING HELD UP IN SAN JUAN AND NOT GETTING YOUR BAGS FOR A WEEK. THE RULES ARE MADE SO THE BIRD CAN GET OFF THE GROUND, AND IF YOU GO OVER THE LIMIT THEY WILL SIMPLY STASH BAGS IN SAN JUAN UNTIL THEY HAVE A FLIGHT WITH LESS LUGGAGE.
If you look at the back of your paper ticket, there are also dimensional guidelines fpr eacj catagory of luggage. The tape measurement around your suitcase is what they are referring to, and if you have any questions re. carry-on, there is a wire frame at the check in that you can drop your bag into to see if it fits the limitations.
