I just recieved my orientation packet and the class schedule is the same. I thought that some of the classes were combined. Anatomy with embryology and bio. stat with genetics. If this is the case, what will be the classes for the upcoming newbies.

class schedule for new first semesters (official as of last week):

8am till 9.20 Biochem M-F

9.30 till 10.20 Intro to Medicine M-F

10.30 till noon Anatomy Lecture M-F

1pm till 3.30pm Anatomy Lab M-F

you probably got the outdated one since they just changed the schedule.

yep.. i forgot to mention it above but the Anatomy class is now combined with embryo... thus longer lectures. the embryo lectures will be taught by the anatomy staff.

and lab is five days a week.

How are they going to handle lab with 160+ students? I thought they were going to divide the labs up into groups of approx 80.

1.5 hours? Hmmm.. is that enough time to get "elbow deep" so to speak? It seems more like you're just getting into it and then it's over.

The class is split into two groups. each group alternates days. one week you are scheduled to go to lab three times and the next two. each cadaver will have two groups assigned to it. so if baditude is in group A on table 1 and skipper is in group B on table 1, they will alternate days along with their respective groups. the only thing you need to keep in mind is that if you are not present for a certain dissection, you must learn it as it will seem like you are a day behind everyday. some people do go to lab everyday during lab dissection (the smartest thing to do) but as long as you go in regularly, you will be fine. micro's and jon's class went througt this system and although it has it flaws, if you do the work you will make it out alive.

flaw= 30+ people failed... just a small flaw

Don't worry guys. those people didn't really goto lab at all, so stay on top of it and get Speros to stop studying for the USMLE to help you out.

I enjoyed the anatomy class I had in undergrad to me it is one of those subjects that seem to make sense. So I am hoping this class is the same way.... I seem to be able to remember all the ridiculous names for some stupid reason.

yeah... you sound like some of the t.a.'s, including myself. i cant remember people's names but if they had the first name of an artery or nerve, i would know it with no problem.

some people find anatomy easier than biochem. and some find biochem easier than anatomy. and those rare, gifted people find both easy. most people i know had to work harder in one or the other. i guess it depends what kind of mind you have...... ie. learn better by hearing or seeying. i had to work harder in biochem but anatomy was no walk in the park either. i truly believe that first semester is about getting your thinking/learning/studying/time management patterns down. i have seen too many people fail one or the either or both. In my opinion only a small minority of those people that failed was studying correctly to begin with. Most people think that they can look at it once and be done with it. As long as people are not in that high school/college mindset, then i think they will see results.

you can be in lab as much as you want... as far as the advise you are asking for: you will get from your orientation advisors and also there will be an intro session to anatomy where the course director and i are going to discuss that along with tips to the whole class etc etc
