for making some of you have to read this question again. I thought there might be a different opinion this time.

It really depends on how mobile you want to be (or how dependant on others you will be without one...).

when i first came down to the rock, 16 months ago, i had the same question. i had asked someone that i worked with that had just finished his five semesters here what he thought about the need of a car. he was convinced that he did not need a car when he was here. but i dont remember the details of his decision. on the other hand... i am torn about the subject. i dont want to say yes you need one or no you dont. i share a car with someone and i am glad that i do. personally, i do not use a car enough to rent one. buying a cheap one maybe is the way to go. i live on campus. if my friends and I decide to do something, i catch a ride with them. if i need to go to the beach... i walk. i use my car maybe once or twice a week for errands. my suggestion is for you to rent a car for the first few days you are here and see for yourself. thats what i did when i came down. i had a rental car waiting for me at the airport and after i brought my stuff to the school, i drove around and explored. when i saw that i would have to use a car sometimes, i decided that i would have to get one. later, i ended up getting one with a friend here and we share it. a good friend of mine here rents one... but how much does he use it... he is still on the same tank of gas from four months ago.... crazy! he only goes to the grocery store once a week and thats it... he walks from his apt. to school.
you will have your answer after you are here for a few days... most likely you will need to have some mode of transportation whether its your own, shared, or bumming rides.

I still don't understand why people are so hesistant to get a car?! Sure, you can bum rides off friends and even borrow their cars but why not avoid the trouble and get a car? Yeah, you'll lose some money on a car but seriously, why suffer a 200k dollar education to save a few bucks here and there. It really isn't gonna make a difference in the end.
There isn't a real market within walking distant and you don't wanna be one of the cheapa$$ 2nd semesters who walk 30 mins just to buy groceries and have it rain on them while they are carrying home their groceries. You won't be able to explore the entire island and all it has to offer while you are on your day offs. You can't go on gyro runs when you get hungry at 2am and you don't have much of a real choice of restaurants near the school. You'll get sick of those restaurants in a matter of weeks. Let's not forget the afternoon drives through Marigot where cows outnumber the pedistrians.
