Do I need to bring with me some Cayman Island currency or will my dollar be accepted at the airport and by taxis until I can get myself a car?
In addition... How did most car owners pay for their cars? Check? CC? Cash? Travelers cheques?

All places here take US dollars as well as CI dollars, so there is no need to worry about that. You can pull CI dollars out of ATMs here using a US account so it is easy to access money you have housed in the states.
If you purchase from an individual (as opposed to a dealer) they will most likely require you pay them in cash. Just to let you know purchasing a car here is a bit different then in the states. The seller must accompy you to the motor vehicle registration place and sign the car over to you in the presence of one of the officials. The car must be current on inspection and registration before it can be sold. You also must have the insurance already in place beore you can register the car in your name. Hope this helps you out.

You can put it on a credit card if...
1. you purchase from a dealer. But they may make you wait until they actually have the funds physically in hard before you can take posession of the car because it can take as long as 21 days. There are many places here that don't accept AMEX.
2. you can pull cash out of an ATM using your credit card.

A Quote from Khamilton: "The seller must accompany you to the motor vehicle registration place and sign the car over to you in the presence of one of the officials."
Could anybody confirm this is true?
What about all those students who purchase their cars before they get to the island from the students who are leaving the island for the master's degree?? In this case, obviously, the seller leaves the island before the buyer gets there.

KHamilton is right, to the best of my knowledge. i am not sure how the transfer will work if the student is leaving, most likely they will have to go to the police station and get a notarized letter stating that they are transferring the car to you, then you would go to the DMV there and transfer, etc.

Then what about all those students who purchase their cars before getting to the island and their sellers leave the island before the buyers arrive? How do they register their cars? Any ideas or experiences?

again, they would prolly get a notarized letter from wherever they are pickin the car up from. dunno if its a great idea to buy a car if the seller will be gone before you can look at it or get the deed...

Hello,
you can organize a transfer if you are not on the island. The owner needs to go to the licensing department, sign it in front of an offical and leave your part blank.
you will then need to collect these papers and go to the same place and officially transfer the car in your name.
You will need insurrance prior to registration. British caymanian and fidelity are the best insurrance deals on the island.
