I had this question on my board. A mutation in TATA box would effect what? I was given transcription of proteins, translation of proteins, transduction, and something else.
I chose translation of proteins but not very sure.

TATA box is also called Pribnow box . It is an A--T rich sequence present 10 base pairs upstream to the promotor region in the prokaryotes . Its function is to guide the RNA polymerase to attach to t he promotor region.It , then , naturally affects the transcription and has nothing to do with translation directly.
This is my inference from its fuction.But my genetics is v weak. If somebody feels that I am not correct, I will welcome any other guidance

Since the TATA box is mutated the end products (proteins) is affected. My answer would be translation of proteins are affected.

If somebody asks what is the effect of severe throbosis of the corornay arteries, I think the answer should be ACUTE MI and not Death.
coronary thrombosis ------> MI--------> arrhthymias--------> DEATH.
However in my point of view the most immediate effect is required.
Yes if transcription is not in the choice then the most immediate effect is translation.This is simply my opion which can be wrong.
since the TATA box is the promoter site not upstream to the promoter, it itself is upstream to the initiation codon. The activators are called transcriptional activators sincet they recruit the initiation complex. RNA polymerase bind the DNA and this as we know is called transcription. Transcription would be the answer i would choose, translation would be a good answer if the question asked about a mutuation in the mRNA itself. (if im wrong please let me know)

Yes you are right and I feel sorry for omission actually TATA is upstream to the transcription start site. That was my omission.Thank you for this correction.
