Hi, I got accepted for May 2005. I am 26 y/o and I going to be in a medical program for a second time. I attended at University of Havana, School of Medicine successfully completing 5 years. Recently I had the opportunity to immigrate to the United States as result of several years separated from my parents and family. Although I had to leave my studies unfinished still my biggest dream is to become a physician. I hope I have a great time with all of you guys. You are going to love the medical school. cya

That is good to hear, a good friend of mine will join your group he is from Toronto as well, MSc in Kinesiology and a DC (Doctor of Chiropractic.) After Reseraching several medical programs he decided to attend SABA. (Was accepted to Ross and AUC) However SABA was his first choice !
Again Congrads to all of you !
From my own research and from discussions in this forum I recommend:
AUC, MUA, ROSS, SGU, SABA as the best MD programs for IMGs.
Great Track record (established more than 5 years ! and cost effective, while comparing US/CDN Educational Standards )
Future MD programs that I think are great, and I am following up with graduates and curriculum are: St. Matthwes, Saint James and AUA, possibly Windsor as well.

I taught Life Science and Environmental Science last year. I've also taught Biology, Physical Science and Chemistry. I took a leave of absence this year to finish my Masters and prereqs for med school. Looks like I'll be taking a permanent leave of absence now!! I'll miss the kids, they were instrumental in my doing this med school thing. What do you teach? Will you miss it?

All about me in this thread:
http://www.valuemd.com/ftopic5177.html
I'm half-way down the page.
Things I'll miss about teaching are those students who are curious and on-fire about learning anything and everything they can, kids who absorb anything I can teach them like sponges. I'll miss how students always seem to help me see a fresh angle on old problems or ideas. I'll miss that feeling when I'm teaching and I really get on a roll, and everything clicks and students get that "eureka" moment all of the sudden. I'll miss having my very own lab where I can blow up stuff, set the ceiling on fire, and get paid for it! :D
I won't miss the "No Child's Behind Left" legislation, our increasingly high-stakes state testing, getting my house vandalized for teaching evolution , babysitting career criminals and drug users, or watching girls with bright futures get knocked up by those drug users, only to miscarry and get pregnant again. (Of course, an MD sees the same and worse, but it's from a slightly different perspective.) I won't miss the ridiculously low salary and lack of respect from the community.
Overall it's been a good experience, I have had great colleagues who work really hard every day for the students. But I'm looking forward to moving on and realizing my own potential further.
My superintendant is mad at me for leaving, I think my principle may cry, but the fact a regular guy like me isn't afraid to chase his dreams seems to inspire the students to do the same.
That's an important lesson all by itself, don't you agree? 8)

Hey all... I got accepted to Saba's May 2005 class a few weeks ago. Amazingly enough, I just found this forum now, so might as well start meeting people now. :) My info:
Personal: 22 years old (turning 23 my first week on the island) from very close to the "sweetest place on earth," Hershey, PA.
Education: Graduating this December from Penn State University with an Animal Bioscience major and minors in Microbiology and Spanish (coincidentally, anyone speak Spanish? I would love to keep it up while I'm on the Rock)
Interests: Music (piano, guitar, singing), Photography, Reading, Salsa Dancing (I'm not that good, I'm just learning and I love it!). I want to learn to speak Dutch, scuba dive, and sail, but I guess I should concentrate on my studies first, huh?
Intended interest in medicine: Hem/Onc or infectious diseases... I love diseases!
OK, gotta get back to reality... I'm having a hard time concentrating on writing my Honor's thesis when I know I'm already in Med School...

Hello everyone----
I found this site just by surfing the net----My name is Guy Domm and I will also be starting Saba in May 2005! I have been in pharmaceutical sales for a number of years. I have a BBA in Business and an MA in Counseling. I have been working and going to school full-time for the last 2 years to get to the ROCK! I am originally from Fargo, ND and with it being 65 below with windchill--I wish I was at Saba now. I have spent the last 5 years in NJ/NY and currently in Fargo until I leave for school. I am a bit nervous about med school but at same time excited to meet everyone and begin school. Anyone have any questions feel free to email me at soon2bgr8md@yahoo.com
See you in May
Guy
Since there are a few students from Texas that will be in our May 2005 class, What are Texas' requirments for licensure and any problems with practicing in Texas after graduating from Saba? The reports I have seen are conflicting--can anyone help? Thanks---- Guy

If you do a search of ValueMD you will find that this topic is discussed a lot. Some basic things you should know about Texas:
1)If you want to get licensed in Texas, you must do all ACGME "green book" clinical rotations. A hospital having just being ACGME in family practice is not good enough. If you do a rotation in psych for example, the hospital must be listed as an ACGME psych program.
2) Texas requires a family practice rotation, and a neurology rotation. The scuttlebutt is that the neurology rotation may not be required after this year, but that's just a rumor so far.
3) You cannot do ANY clinicals in Texas, unless you are enrolled as a visiting student in a Texas medical school and still be licensed.
Texas appears to be loosening up a little; they may do away with the neurology rotation requirement, and they did give the OK to Ross for licensure of Ross grads. All other caribbean grads are still treated on a case-by-case basis.
Texas will not license someone who has lost their license, or been denied a license in another state. A good strategy in dealing with Texas would probably be to get licensed in another state, such as OK or an easier state like Maryland, become board certified, and then apply for licensure in Texas. At least, that will probably be my strategy.

Hello Guy
Wolf has all the info, and like he suggests , we had planned on getting going elsewhere first. It helps to remember that there are Saba alum practicing here, so its not its not impossible.
When Ed goes to the boards he plans to use the fact that he has been a practicing PA, in good standing in Texas for the last nine years. All of the medical boards here are very tough, but not impossible. Although they do have hard and fast rules, they do also truly look at every application on an individual basis.
If you really have your heart set on practicing in Texas, I would double check the rules when you are set to do clinicals and act accordingly. Then I would double check again before residency and act accordingly. Then I would probably still go somewhere else first.
The three years of residency for IMGs is solid and unwaivering as far as I can tell, which makes a state with a two year rule a little more attractive to us.
Bobbi
wolfvgang22
01-19-2005, 02:39 PM
Right. Regarding the residency thing, some states like LA and HW and Maryland only require two years of residency prior to licensure, which makes them good places to get your first license. (I think SC is 2 years too?)
Anyway, the thing licensure does for you is make it possible to make more money, particularly with moonlighting.
You will still end up doing at least 3 years of residency to get board certified in Family Practice or IM anyway, or longer if you choose a subspecialty of any kind.
I have another quetion to anyone out there----with regards to ACGME accreditation--- On the ACGME accreditation page of listed clinical rotation programs---very few of Saba's clinical sites are listed--- On the site from valuemd that lists state licensure qualification ----it doesn't mention that Texas requires clinicals done at ACGME listed sites--- I believe everyone that says it's required---BUT this makes me wonder if other states require it as well but ALSO dont list it as a requirement. I guess I'm wondering if other states have the same stringent requirements in respect to doing clinicals at NON-ACGME sites as Texas? and if so which ones?
In addition to this I also heard that ALL rotations and clinicals must be done at teaching hospitals--which I was told that all of the ones listed meet that requirement--
thanks----

The ValueMD page listing requirements for state licensures is not complete, rather it is a rough outline. Check instead the rules for licensure stated on each states individual website. Links to the state medical boards websites can be found at http://www.fsmb.org/members.htm. Texas spells out that ACGME clinicals are required. ACGME sites most often are teaching hospitals. Other states, such as Hawaii do not require ACGME clinicals.
You can find a link to a list of Saba's clinical sites on the "advice" page of my website, which you may have only if you promise to vote for me as "most likely to win a Stevie Award" at Saba. 8)
Please note that this list is not complete. Agreements with hospitals can change from year to year. For example, I now hear that Oklahoma rotations may be available, but I don't know which hospital is available. My guess is one in Tulsa. Anyway...
Some of Saba's clinical sites are greenbook. However, if you want to avoid the challenge of getting all ACGME rotations, you can always do your cores in the UK and then your electives in the US. UK rotations are automatically counted greenbook. Also, greenbook electives are supposed to be easy to schedule in the US during yout 4th year.
One word of caution, however: If you schedule your own rotation you have to work with the clinical director at Saba to make sure that a written affiliation contract is put in place between the hospital and Saba in order for the rotation to count, at least in the eyes of the Texas State Medical Board of Examiners.
Oh, and one more little tid-bit for your reading enjoyment:
§155.004
Additional Eligibility Requirements for Graduates of Certain Foreign Medical Schools
A license applicant who is a graduate of a medical school that is located outside the United States and Canada must present proof satisfactory to the board that the applicant:
(1) is a graduate of a school whose curriculum meets the requirements for an unapproved medical school as determined by a committee of experts selected by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board;
(2) has successfully completed at least three years of graduate medical training in the United States or Canada that was approved by the board;
(3) is eligible for a license to practice medicine in the country in which the school is located, except for any citizenship requirements;
(4) holds a valid certificate issued by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates; and
(5) is able to communicate in English.
But I don't think that's a problem for Saba students.
Have a nice day. :)

hello, i'm planning on pursuing an MD, starting with science course work, i didn't take in school. i was wondering how many current students, wrote the Mcat, currently i'm planning to take it and see if I can get into the brody school of med at east carolina, but i'm thinking, i would almost rather pursue school at saba, or neighboring schools, I've been reading the forums and obsessing over state medical board websites for so long (2 months) that, i can hardley wait to begin classes, I'm pretty much planning on taking most to all of the prereq classes (a few over again) at a community college, taking the Mcat and going from there. any advice from students that have gone/are going through the process, would be great

You also have an option of doing premedical program at MUA and just do the credits you require to get into Saba medical program. I did not take MCAT and many other students coming this may 2005 have not taken MCAT but its always good to take it...you never know Saba will make MCAT scors mandatory due to high volume of incoming students.....

just an update -- I'm heading down to Saba next week just for a visit. Spending two days on St. Maarten - two on Saba including a day of diving and a separate day touring the school then back to St. Maarten for one more day of drinking.
I was able to get tickets to St. Maarten for 535. I've seen as low as 435 from KC but those fairs weren't available on my short notice flight. I was getting a lot of different prices for winair to Saba ranging from 280 to 120. A phone call to the St. Maarten office got me "the special" of 56 round trip. I'm sure it only cost me $500 in telephone charges to get that rate LOL.
Anyways. I'll stomp around for yall.

what's up bro,
I am in the may 2005 class for SABA, at the same time I am also applying to tons of schools in the US, I've been trying to get in for the last two years. I'm a new york resident so that works against me, I've taken the MCAT and eventually pulled a 38 total. But as of yet I've gotten mostly rejections, I still have about 30 schools left, but I had terrible undergrad grades and not much of an application, no volunteer experience .. etc.. I think if you are a resident , then you got a good chance of getting into brody, I looked at their numbers, I encourage you to take the MCATs and try your state school. If not you go to school on a tropical island, so that can't be to bad.

Who among the incoming class is looking to get into herbal medicine?
I think y'all know what I'm talkin about,
now I don't encourage overuse to my future patients but once every 3 months is an appropriate protocol in my opinion,
This way there is no cumulative effects but you recieve the benefit of interupting your nervous system allowing breakthroughs to occur.
I'd like to start a club at Saba which studies the biological effects of these herbal remedies

Will that involve weed...if so i am in.... :D ... :D .... :D

I am not encouraging the inappropriate use of these herbs,
but perhaps we good men and women of SABA can use then to benefit ourselves and others, I for one!!! will not accept the dismissal of a valud therapy without thorough analysis!!
or I just like to smokedy smokedy..

So let me guess showing up high to anatomy wouldn't be looked upon favorably??

That said, let me remind you that Saba is pretty serious about it's anti-drug policy. They tell you there is random drug testing and there IS random drug testing.
Your glaucoma, UC, and nausea will have to take a back seat to staying in school.

I have heard that getting a taxi and having a day to spend in a hotel can cost a lot of money at SXM....i am arriving on the 29th of May at 10:00pm and my best buy to save money is to either stay at the airport or to find other students that might share the taxi....and living expense for a day.....don't know how to do that though......

Myself and another student starting in May are also arriving at SXM at 10pm on April 29th and we were just going to get a hotel for night close to airport (so far cheapest I have found on internet is 109 US) then take the ferry over in the morning. If there is a few of us, it might be cheaper if we all share the costs if anyone is interested.

Runs perfect. No maintenance needed. Oil just changed. New insurance for next 6 months. New sticker. She purrs. Cheap. Leaving island April 15th. Unless you live on the bottom, you need a car! You can send money order here to island or preferably to my US addy. Pictures on request. (PM me for pics.) Do like most of the smarter students, have a car waiting and beat the "Dash." 1. are you planning on coming back to Canada? how tough would be it be to come back here as a grad of foreign med school? do they accept SABA grads?
2. if you decide to work in the US, would getting into clinicals/residencies be tougher? (i.e. visa, etc..)
3. any other info that you can pass along???..........please do not hesitate

Well its not tough to come back to Canada....all you have to do is pass USMLE step 1 and 2..or write Canadian exams and compete for residency. Its easier to do your residency in U.S and then come back to canada after you are done.
Well as a Canadian, you have to apply for H1-B visa to get a residency and you can only do so if you have got your ECFMG certificate.
WOrk hard and you will make it....
