Can we use xp home or do we have to buy xp professional. The software is very expensive and I am wondering if I can skip buying it.

I know that IT both here in Oviedo and on Cayman strongly recommend Professional, due to network conflicts they were having with people on Home. My laptop here in the office was on home (came with the laptop), and I had a ton of problems on the SMU network until I installed XP.

Just my couple of pennies.

I purchased mine and it cost me 100 something bucks, but trust me its worth it. That's what the loans are for, save up on something, but use the best software, you'll be thankful later.

When you say "here", do you mean SMU? So, can I wait until arriving there to actually see how mine works and whether I need XP?

If it is true that a lot of lectures are powerpoint based...you will need to install Microsoft Office as well.

Since many professors use Power Point for their lectures it is imperative to have Microsoft Office. I would suggest Office XP becuase it offers some features that are not available in the earlier versions like being able to make "ink" notations on the slides and save them which really come in handy when studying.
