View Full Version : How was immunology?
I will be taking immunology along with some other classes this coming term. How do you study for immuno? How are the exams? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

Immuno with Jackie Stanley was one of the biggest ----sandwich classes I have ever taken in my life. As someone who went to most lectures- even histo and ranga, I could not sit through hers. Know her book and her lecture notes cold. For the first unified, know about chronic granulomatous disease and antibody cleavage with papain. For the final, you can answer correctly without even reading the question by playing the "one of these things is not like the other..." game. And one more thing- do go to Lennon's lectures on lab techniques, because the notes are pretty incomprehensible as a stand-alone, there's no section on it in her book, and that stuff is pretty heavily tested.

I hate to jump all over a prof I haven't even seen yet, but I swear I've heard the exact same thing as above from everyone I've talked to about the immuno class at SGU! What's funny is that I'm not hearing that "it's a waste of time to go to immuno lectures"... rather, I'm hearing that "you'll learn the material better if you don't go"!!!
I've taken immunology before, so I'm really not that worried, but I'm just curious as to how any professor/class can be so ultimately horrible? What is it that she does/doesn't do that leaves such a bad taste in everyone's mouth???

Notes suck (powerpoints)!! She just reads off the notes word for word. She is really unorganized and sometimes just gets lost in the middle of her lectures. Basically it sucks. Neuro isnt any better!! Physio was a great class, and dont get me started on those two 1 unit ** classes!!! Parasit is HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I found it helpful to go to the visiting lecturers classes. I was pretty frustrated through Stanleys lectures though.
I went to every single class, but really, you don't have to.
Like people have said earlier...know her book and lecture notes cold. Do the old mac daddy q's and when possible., use some of the books in the library (not the reserve onces) for practice questions using case studies.
She also has released practice q's on the immuno web site which are exactly like the test questions.
DO NOT BUY ANY BOOK OTHER THAN THE ONE THAT SHE WROTE....or you will be maaaaaad at the end of the first week!

I agree with the previous posts. Know the book and her notes cold. Whatever is not in her book is in the notes. I disagree with a previous post that Dr Lennon's lectures are tested heavily on. I think the total was 3-4 questions out of 55. However, do go to his lecture because the notes don't say anything. I didn't go but picked up a micro book and figured it out.
There will be an extra credit 5 pt on the midterm based on an article (don't know if this will apply to your class). I stopped going to class quite early in the semester and did very well. However, I had taken immuno in undergard and my class was exactly the same.
I will be doing the Immuno DES if ever in doubt drop by :D

I found that it was good to go to the lectures...or get another to go to fill out the diagrams and charts.... She has these 'tree' diagrams...with breakdowns of the processes and players involved. If you went thru and memorized the charts.... almost all of the answers go with them.....eg superantigens... etc. Plus it's an easier way to remember. ...so my only point is get her corrections on her book(which she provided in class...maybe they've reprinted the version) and study those charts. She still have a blue and white track suit?

Can you buy used or go to the library and try to check out a copy as long as possible (before they are all gone)? I know there are several on reserve at the library but you could check the shelves upstairs too. Act fast. You have to have the book for this class.

Last term the books weren't in at the beginning of the semester but professor Stanley distributed a copy of the first three chapters in lecture. Books came in rather quickly, either end of first week or beginning of second one.

Well it is very clear that the immuno class is not the best, but are you just learning to prepare for the class tests or is there any benefit for the boards???
