Just a quick question regarding milk products on the island. What types of milk are available....at a resonable price...on the island.....Whole milk, low fat....soy...? I am used to drinking low fat milk and would be willing to adjust to whatever is available.....just wondering.
Thx.

At the Real Value they have skim milk, low-fat and whole milk -- sometimes imported from Florida, sometimes from Trinidad/Tobago. They also have that UHT stuff that lasts for weeks, powered milk, and I think soy too (though I have never looked for it, since I don't drink it.)
Also, the d-store on campus has that shelf milk stuff, but no other kinds.

Even got Lactaid!!
What a life-saver! Got a ballpark figure how much a half gallon will set me back on that? I can get a half gallon in So Cal for about $3 on a good deal.

As a confirmed "milk addict" with a gallon+ per day habit (thank God I drink nonfat), I can tell you that milk is EXPENSIVE on the island!
In CA (Fresno), I pay $3.89 for 2 gallons of nonfat milk at certain stores (making it < $2.00/gal). I can't remember exactly what the prices are in Grenada, but I'm pretty sure it's at the very least 2x as expensive, if not 3x or more! Once I got a car (after midterms), I would seriously go to the store almost every day for milk, and I'd estimate that I probably spent US $200-$300 on milk alone my first semester!!! If you have a similar need as myself for cow's tit, you're going to have to learn to curb it on the island (as I have to next term)!!!
Also, while a surprising variety is available (as stated above), milk does tend to go fast! You WILL go to the store at times and not be able to get "real" milk (in this case, I would always settle for Lactaid, then Soy as a last resort). I've never tried the powdered stuff, however, and probably never will. But if you can stand it, it's always available.

You drink a gallon a day?!?! I drank about a gallon of WATER a day, and I still felt a bit bloated!!!
as for that second comment: just imagine the mental image of snitzle chasing a grenadian cow (since they're everywhere - even on campus) :D

As for prices, I remember that the not-from-concentrate Tropicana OJ is around $6-7/half-gallon. Milk was somewhat cheaper... can't remember an exact price-- maybe around $4/half gallon.

someone mentioned protein shakes:
better bring it down with you;
they sell some stuff in grenada, but it's a bit pricey, and it's fairly low quality (no isolate here.... :( )

Better to bring down powdered protein or protein bars?
I was thinking that powdered protein jars would be quite heavy, considering the suitcase weight requirements. Is it really that expensive down there?
Thanks,

I paid about 130 ECD (about 65cdn) for about a kilo of low quality protein. (about 20 grams per 40 g. serving) tasted like mud, looked like mud (come to think of it - I think someone marketed powdered mud in a container :D ).
There was some stuff in Real Value that I didn't try (by the time I was going to buy some there, my family had sent me a care package that included protein).
I haven't seen a major protein brand (EAS, prolab, designer protein etc).
if anyone who sees this post knows where to get protein on the island, please let me know (I got mine from the place in excel plaza on the lower level; does the gym on upper level sell protein?)
