Hi

Anyone know where is Grand Anse Shopping Centre relative to the Grand Anse dorms (i.e. is it walking distance and if so how close)? Reason is my bank is in there (Scotiabank).

Also wanted to know where is Southwinds Apartments and Grenada Grand Beach Resort relative to the Grand Anse dorms too.

And..........did anyone even bother hooking up internet to the their rooms in Grand Anse? Man, I was looking at the cost.............and compared to North America.....its MAD!!!

take care guys,

The Grand Anse Shopping Centre/Scotia Bank is about 3 minutes drive from the Grand anse dorms. South winds is about the same distance in the opposite direction.
Grand beach is across the street from Grand anse shopping centre and scotia bank.

Don't bother getting internet in Grand Anse dorms. Firefly (the campus wireless internet network) is now up and running in the GA study room.

I was just down there and I didn't see the Grande Anse shopping center. I just saw the spiceland mall across the street and excel plaza which is walking distance, are either one of those the same shopping center? thanks

No I don't think that the Spiceland Mall or the plaza you mentioned is the same thing (unless I'm mistaken). If anyone knows where this Grand Anse Shopping Center is and if how can I get there from the dorms please let me know. My bank, ScotiaBank, apparently has a branch in there and if its close to the dorms, plus in a shopping center, well that would be so convenient.

take care

p.s. Thanks for the info on the internet connection. Which floor are the GA study rooms on? Ground floor I guess? Plus should I bring any cords for my laptop so that I can hook it up to the internet connection and if so, is it just a regular phone cord or the ethernet cord?

Definitely bring an ethernet cable; that thing's a life saver when Firefly is down. Bourne has access, histo lab has one per table & all jacks on the 24 hr study floor @ the library are live. And if you're in SD2, the study room on the top floor is also wired.
You probably wouldn't want to bother with a regular phone cord unless you want to get dial up in your own apartment or dorm room.

If you come out of the Grand Anse campus & walk left on the sidewalk, you'd be heading towards the 3-way roundabout. Hang a left at that roundabout and walk for about 3-4 mnts, you'd be heading towards the Grand Anse shopping center @ the stop light. That stop light is also the entrance to the Grenada Grand Beach Resort.
This has ********'s Pharmacy, Food Fair grocery store - which I found to be cheaper than not-so-value RealValue - along with a few other stores.

Hey Gradstudent,

just to let you know: ScotiaBank in the Caribbean and ScotiaBank in Canada are NOT the same thing. You can't use it as you would a normal Canadian bank. I'm also pretty sure your Scotiabank card will NOT work there, although it may work at NBC. I use CIBC and I know that their cards work at NBC (I also know that Royal Bank cards work there)

Cheers,

Hi there SilentThunder

I was just wondering about what you said in your previous post. What do you mean its not the same thing?

I just opened an account with Scotiabank and they gave me the address of their branch in Grand Anse Shopping Center (phone number, address, etc). In case for some reason my scotia card doesn't work their, they said that I would have to open an account there, and transfer funds between branches. But since its a transfer between branches, it takes only 1 business day.

Please pass on whatever you know regarding banking, which I may not know.....

Or if you want u can just PM me

thanks for your help

Hey,

I use Scotiabank as well and your atm card will work at the Scotia bank machine and also at the NCB machine. There's a $5CDN service fee for using the NCB bank machine.

However, you won't be able to access your Canadian bank account through the tellers at the Scotia bank. They told me its because the funds are in CDN and not XCD.

Is there a fee for transferring funds? Let me know if you find out.

Hey there marco

Nice to see your post.......just wanted to check one thing with you, so you are able to use your ATM Scotia card at scotia machines in St. George's? Just wanted to double check this so that I can access my canadian account here.

This is good news for Canadian students at SGU I have to say then.......

As for transferring between scotia branches, the branch manager told me that there is no charge (or should not be). And he told me that it would take 1 business day.

Please let me know about the ATM card and whether I can access my canadian account from down there.

See you there!

Hi Marco and everyone reading this....

I read in your last post you mentioned that we can't access our canadian account from the tellers in the branch itself? Why not? And also what is XCD and NCB?

VHS, DVD, JVC, PCMIA, and so on...........LOL!

GS

Yes, you can use your Scotia ATM card at the Scotia machine. Although its not very convenient getting to the scotia machine across from Grand Anse Mall, I would suggest you use that one as there is a $5CDN service charge for using the NCB machine. NCB stands for National Commercial Bank.

XCD is the abbreviation for Eastern Caribbean Dollars. The teller said that because my account was in Canadian dollars and not Eastern Caribbean dollars, they can't process it.

I was planning to open a USD account at a Scotia Bank. I thought it would be easier to have my home branch here in toronto rather than SGU. And since it's USD account, I thought I'd be able to use the tellers in grenada... Is that true or will I only be able to use the bank machine?

You would still only be able to use the bank machine. Its nice to have a USD bank account. I use it to pay tuition. Makes it easier than having to buy a money order everytime the school comes asking for money.
