Hi guys

Just wanted to know how many times a week is there an anatomy lab and histo lab? Is it once a week for each, or more often? I'm thinking about how to schedule in study time if I'm always in lab......geez.

take care

You're scheduled only 1 lab session of each, Histo & Gross. But for Gross, depending on which group you're in (A B C or D) you spend more time in the lab than others. e.g. this past term, A&B had the shorter single dissections which finished quicker while C&D had doubles and needed to return over the weekend to finish. It may depend on which crew has the very first dissection (superficial back?) of the term.

All groups had to spend unscheduled lab time to prep for the weekly table quizzes.

It's a whole lot of stuff (study, labs, group meets, etc) but don't worry, you figure it out. Sooner or later.

It looks daunting from the outside. Don't you guys get tired and want to throw down everything after being in labs and lectures all day? Geez......I'm hoping I'll get through this though.

thanks for the info. I took a look at the schedule on the member sight, and saw the scheduling of the labs, and freaked out at 2 labs each for histo and anatomy/week........but that is not the case.

thanks

Ah, I see the source of you panic now. The Monday morning Gross lab is for group C&D, and the Friday morning one is for A&B. The schedule should really say which groups (the printed one you receive @ orientation will) are assigned which session. Same goes for Histo. The group you're in depends on your last name. So, very roughly, A-D, E-M, N-R & S-Z end up being the respective A, B, C & D's.

Feel better?! :)

Hey Tami

Thanks for the clarification.....phew!!!

Well for me, I feel better, but to an extent..........I think I'll be in group C, which means coming back to the lab on the weekends? Plus Monday Morning labs? Great.............sign me up, yahoo..........LOL.

I'm female by the way, and "handshake"....nice to meet you

take care

Yeah, last term groups C and D had the harder, longer labs :-(

can anyone tell me what the student to cadaver ratio is? :?

Anyone interesting in switching groups with me?

There will be 4-5 in a lab group dissecting at one time. On Tuesday, one group will dissect one side of the body, and the other the other side for lab 1. (i.e. Superficial Back) Then on Friday, the other two groups will each dissect their respective side for lab 2 (i.e. deep back)

So while there are technically 16-20 students per cadaver, only 4-5 will be working on it at a time. Also, I really never had problems with not having access to it during "after hours" lab time -- there is plenty of time since the lab is open till midnight or later...

 so does anyone have any stories from the first day of anatomy lab?

i was looking at pics of the lab online and my stomach was turning just at the online pic of the cadavers...i'm sure i'll get over it soon enough, but i'm pretty sure i'm either going to pass out or vomit at the first sight of my cadaver. :?

About the cadavers, they really aren't that bad. I took Anat &Phys in college and it was the coolest thing I had every done. Just like you I was pretty nervous about the first day...since I had never seen a dead body. I had pictures in my mind as to how they would look and to much of my surprise they did not look real. The only morbid part of it was the head, feet, and hands. Besides that you forget the fact that they were real living people at one point. Being able to study the body and learn all about it's many amazing things just blows you away. Once you see that you have a greater appreciation for these people who donated their bodies in the pursuit of science. Hope that helps alleviate some of your worries.

Hi there

How is it that Group C or D's labs are harder and longer? I could not understand this since I assumed that everyone would have the same labs??

Discrimination!!! Ok no just kidding, but I still would like to know the difference.

So now I have to deal with anatomy lab issue, and my rice-issue (i'm asian, cant live without it)....bring it on!!

LOL

Just a quick question someone told me that after midterms the lab groups switch schedules a bit ? I was wondering if this was true ?

Yeah, for your anatomy lab if you had 8 am lab, then you will have 9 am lab after midterms. The days switch also, so if you had Friday lab before, you will get Tuesday lab after midterms. Don't really know if that made a difference in the difficulty of labs last term, 'cause I didn't spend too much time in after hours lab -too much time spent in anat lab and I couldn't learn all the other anatomy/biochem/histo/embryo.

CD labs are different from AB labs. You dissect different things, but you need to learn both groups' lab stuff. And you will only get demonstration quizzes on the part your group dissected (if they still decide to keep these things this term, prolly will.

Can't. There's 28 lab sessions & only about 14-15 weeks to finish them. If each grp did the same exact lab, there would be half that nobody got to do. This way, you do the 14 you're assigned & partner with someone on the other side to learn the other 14, so that you know all of them come exam time.

It's luck o' the draw, I guess, coz the sequence of labs is planned so that a certain portion of the cadaver must be exposed before the next one can be worked on. For example, the posterior abdominal wall dissection can't happen till the peritoneal cavity/GIT groups are done, lungs/pleura before heart/mediastinum, and so on.

I wouldn't celebrate yet, bubs. Imagine having to learn the more complicated stuff on your own when you didn't cut it yourself and you weren't even table quizzed on it. Translation - you'll end up working harder. Hey, I am very very glad I had the complicated (C&D) labs coz since you had to know ALL labs (the ones you dissect as well as the ones you don't dissect), I already knew the ones I did on my own, and the easier ones (which I didn't dissect) were cake to learn.

Be warned, though: things may switch around and become the exact inverse of this past term. 8)

Good luck!

Haha, thanks Tami!

Regardless of which group, working hard is a must!
