View Full Version : Clinical Rotations and Step 1
I'm starting my clinicals in NY this Sept. I definitely will not receive my Step 1 scores by the time I start the rotation. How many weeks into the clinicals do I need to receive my scores without having to stop my rotations? Also, how late can I take my Step 1 in relations to start date of the rotations (ie. an extreme case-can i take it the day before rotations start)???
Thanks,
Binz

As far as I know, you are allowed a total of 12 weeks of rotations within NY without your scores.... UK is unlimited....But, there is some documentation that may force you to do all of your rotations at SGU affiliated hospitals if you do not have your results in by the time of your rotations. So I would contact bayshore and get the details.

i did not know you can start rotation without your school. i thought ones scores shows that they have passed 2nd year.
In NY you can start your rotations without your scores....So, I've been told by previous students and administration. But in other states, ie. NJ, you have to have your scores before you can start rotations.

It is highly recommended that you take and pass step I before starting rotations!! The school may allow you to start rotations based on your bsce II and with step I scores pending.
For example, if you are placed in a clinical center that starts on Aug 18th and you took your step I on Aug 8th and have already passed BSCE II, the school may let you start rotations pending your step I scores, which obviously will not be back by the Aug 18th start date. This will only happen if you choose to do rotations in NY state.
NY state is unique in that it allows students to do 12 weeks of rotations without step I scores. Note that these 12 weeks will be considered unaffiliated rotations EVEN if you do them at an SGU affiliate and this will become important for licensing as some states only allow up to 8 weeks of unaffiliated rotations.
So the simple answer is this: you will no doubt be told which center or hopsital you'll be placed at and have a rough idea of starting dates. Try to sit for your step I exam 2-3 weeks before that date so you'll have scores before you start.
Hope this helps a bit.... ask if you need further clarification
