hey guys, my cell plan is up in a week and i was looking for deals and i told the cell phone guy that i will be going down to school in the carib. in january, and he mentioned that it might be wise to get a quad band phone and unlock it, so i can just change the card in the phone to the local service whatever it may be(or something like that). has anyone done this, if so are the rates better than getting a regular phone, or calling with a laptop? im really confused about this cus i think he might have been just trying to sell me an expensive phone. any info is appreciated

Hey,

I just got back from Grenada and found out Cingular works down there. I was getting great reception and was able to call home and accept calls from the US. I'm sure I just gave Cingular mad money with my current plan since it doens't include international coverage. I'm not sure what plans they have for Grenada, but at least there is a US carrier which works down there.

I doubt this answered your question, but definetely something else for you to look into.

the US uses 1900MHz and Grenada uses 1800MHz and unfortunately the typical Dual band GSM phones in the states have 900 and 1900MHz bands, so you have to have at least a tri-band phone to have it work both in the US and Grenada. If your Cingular phone is tri-band, then you can get Cingular to unlock it and then you just need to buy the SIM chip when you get to Grenada. The chip will only cost ~20-25 EC$(US$10)(AT&T was offering the SIM for 25, but gave you a $50 phone card).
I have a Nokia 6610 from T-mobile (which they unlocked)and it works fine down in Grenada. (T-mobile by the way works, but it costs an arm and leg...)
Most people seem to have a pre-paid cell, but if you want internet in your room, you'll have to get a phone line from Cable and Wireless.
Hope this helps!

Digicel is on a 900mhz band.

 No matter what, it is NOT financially reasonable to get your US phone and use it there. You will pay a lot of money to call from GDA back to the US. This is a small island, you are there for less than 2 years, you do not need a cell phone. Get a land line, and use calling cards.

hahaha yeah sure man. no one gets a landline anymore in grenada or dominica. Digicel sells some very cheap phones. Get one of those and use prepaid calling cards. Their rates are allright. But u have free incoming calls, have your parents call you so you don't have to worry about paying down there.

Forget land lines. C and Cable and wireless calling cards for use on land lines are HIGHWAY ROBBERY.

Dude,

I would highly suggest getting an Unlocked QuadBand phone.

(that is if you don't have a fetish on chaning phones often).

that's the route I'm taking. (so i can just change sim Cards and not have to worry about transferring my phonebook everytime i get a new phone).

I plan on using the phone in Grenada and then just changing the sim to another GSM carrier in the states when I move there.

would it be more economical to get a phone in grenada with a plan or to bring a phone down and purchase a plan there?

Once again, it depends on if you don't mind moving your phone book whenever you change phones or resetting your settings.
