I definitely won't be able to fit all my stuff in two suitcases. Does anyone know of the best method to ship things down? Can we bring extra suitcases for an extra charge? Any info would be really helpful, thanks

With respect to extra cases: depends by airline - call 'em to find out (most airlines I know about to Grenada won't, due to the small plane sizes)
as for shipping - try a search of past threads for this info.
be aware that you will get charged duty on stuff you bring into the country, sometimes quite a bit!!! (past posts detail this a bit).
I used AmeriJet, and didn't have any issues, but depending on where you are, you may not be able to use them. The stuff got to me pretty quickly (something like 4 days), and was not damaged. My roommate also used them, and he had similar results.

It depends on the airline, Air Jamaica lets you bring a 3rd to 5th 70lb bag for $55 each (and charges you $110 for an overweight bag, even its a pound over!!), US Air will let you bring a 3rd 70lb bag for US$80. American I'm not so sure able (but I can't imagine that they would let you bring extra, since they can't manage the bags they do let you bring!!).

Whatever you do, DO NOT use Amerijet's "My SkyMail" program! I used them the first half of last term, and it's not worth it. Packages took forever to arrive and be processed (>2 weeks usually), it cost a fortune, and I always ended up going down to their office to pick stuff up anyway (as opposed to waiting another 3-4 days for them to get it to the school's mailroom), which is a hassle! :x
Just have people send your stuff FedEx or via 'regular' Amerijet.

How is "regular" Amerijet different from "My Sky Mail"? Do you just pick up regular straight from the airport? I'm looking to bring a whole lotta stuff down too.

Does Fedex charge you an arm and leg?

Hi Babu,
I checked and the prices to ship things to Grenada via FedEx are CRAZY high! Probably not the best option if you're trying to save money....
Try shipping through an airline such as BWIA. I think it's supposed to be cheaper. As well, I'm sure it would not cost you that much extra to just check in an extra bag on your flight when you get to Grenada in August. Just check with your airline regarding the rates.
Hope this helps,

American Airlines lets you bring extra luggage as well. You are allowed 2 suitcases :70lbs each and no more than 62" width, depth and height added together per person plus a carry on and a personal item.
A 3rd suitcase(70lbs) checked in is $80 extra. Hope this helps.

About the 2 bags at 70 lbs each, I have heard that in reality, once you get to Puerto Rico, it becomes one bag each. I think there is aletterfrom an AA rep somewhere here on valuemd addressing this. any definitive answer?

I called about this and had them look up my flight on AA. I was told 2 suitcases no more that 62 linear inches and weighing a total (both together) of 70 lbs. In addition, there is an embargo on extra luggage through the entire month of August so they won't let you pay extra to take another bag. I have no idea how I can take everything I need in just 70 lbs?!?

Try sorting stuff into 'can't-live-without-it-for-4-months' and 'can-take-back-in-January' portions and see if that thins it down a little. It's going to be very tough, though. I wasn't able to downsize my luggage & therefore chose to fly America West to JFK, just so I could take AirJamaica (bigger baggage allowance) from there to Grenada. It ended up costing more in fare, but extra luggage I was able to take plus the peace of mind that I had all my stuff travelling with me was worth it. $$ wise, it probably came to about the same if I had shipped it, but my bags didn't get opened at the airport so I wasn't charged customs' duty as opposed to the guaranteed customs if I'd shipped that extra stufff. I know some people paid upwards to $200 US dollars for just books/clothes/shoes/dishes kind of things.
