Hi there. I'm not sure what you mean by real statistic. From SGU, I know it is >90%. It should be somewhere on the school's website.
The first time pass rate for all international schools combined is, I think, around 60%. The exact number is probably on ECFMG's website.
If you are saying these statistics are not real, I don't know the basis of your claim. Based on the people that graduated with me a couple of weeks ago, it's probably accurate. It was pretty much the same group that I left Vinnie's with, in addition of course to people from different terms.
Either way, don't worry too much about the exact number. A statistical pass rate obviously isn't what's going to make you pass. It's all up to you to put in the hard work, and contribute to the statistic.
Good luck,
Ravpreet

I was wondering if anyoneone knows the REAL statistic of the USLME STEP 1 pass rate of those who make it to the boards in a timely fashion?
i remember steph had this stat...... but of those who are certified to take step 1 what percentage pass?
thanks
i dont know what "certified to take the step one" means either. the numebr quoted is the real number; the question should be is what % of an incoming class make it to the boards with their class. Tradiationally its been 90% until the last few years. now its probably baout 75% with the stricter promotion standards and maybe bigger class. In the us this figure is about 90% overall. At other med schools it ranges from about sgu's figure to abysmal.

any responses? i saw that is said 90% on the website, and it was cited. but i couldnt find the actual publication and the printed words with SGU's name on it. two people did respond. the web site is a "publication" with sgu's name on it. im really not clear on what you mean by certified or by publication if the web site doesnt count; ask for their catalogue if you want a hard copy (or print the web site off for that matter).

Last term, an administrator of the USMLE's came down to give a lecture and he verified this percentage.

st. george's university claims that it will NOT certify students to take the USMLE Step 1 if they have failed both BSCE 1 and 2 and have a GPA below 2.5 If you have above a 2.5 and have failed both of the those exams, you can be certified to sit for the exam. if you have passed one of those exams, you can sit for the exam.......
essentially, the people who are certified are allowed to take the test. is that what you mean, steph, about the people who MAKE IT to the boards? i think we are probably talking about the same thing then...... stricter regulations......
Overall, i justed wanted to get an official statistic that has not been tweeked by SGU. Furthermore, i wanted to see how the basic science education at SGU holds up against some of the strong US schools.
thanks for the replies....
sorry I missed this bit; in short yes: the question is 1) whats the pass rate and 2) what percent of incoming students make it to their boards with their class. obviously then, this tkaes into accoun tthe bsce/gpa issue but other things too; people who decel or drop out (there are few drop outs). The answer is about 25% dont (or 75% do) make it to the boards with their class. what happens to these? the vast majority go on to take them (usually a term later) and pass. Why is this important? because 10 different schools can claim a 90% pass rate but some will only see 1/2 the class even making it as far as the boards. SGU's numbers haven't looked as good in the last 4 years or so since they make the promotions more rigorous which is interesting if you think about it as the pass rate was actually a bit higher before they did (but so was the US pass rate).
