initial vaccines against haemophilius influenzae type B prepared with capsular polysaccharides were not very effective in children less than 2 yo. subsequent vaccines have been greatly improved by the conjugation of the capsular polysaccharides to one of several proteins. why does this conjugation improve immunogenicity?
1. cd4+ T lymphocytes are activated
2. cycotoxic T lymphocytes responses are increased
3. direct activation od B lymphocytes by the vaccine is increased
4. nonimmune clearance of the vaccine is decreased
5. phagocytosis of the vaccine in increased

Choice 5 I believe, because capsular polysaccharide is resistant to phagocytosis. By conjugating it with protein, we increase it's ability to be phagocytized and antigenic processing to occur so that an immune response can occur on subsequent exposure to it.
