Normal Adult Red Blood Cells

These are normal red blood cells from the peripheral blood of an adult. The erythrocytes are of even size. They are enucleated, well filled with hemoglobin, and they have central pale zones, caused by their biconcavity.

Burr cells: red cells covered with short uniform spicules.
Found in severe uremia, hemolytic states or can also be artefact (stored EDTA blood), retinitis pigmentosa / abetalipoproteinaemia

Howell-Jolly bodies are spherical blue-black inclusions of red blood cells seen on Wright-stained smears. They are nuclear fragments of condensed DNA, 1 to 2 µm in diameter, normally removed by the spleen. They are seen in severe hemolytic anemias, in patients with dysfunctional spleens or after splenectomy.
