I have general questions sometimes about SABA (housing, living on island, stuff to bring, etc), and I'm sure so does everybody else. What are some questions you guys might have? List them here...Can current or past students help us out on this and try to answer some of these if you can? Thank you for your time! :)
1. To start this off, I was wondering about health insurance on SABA...can someone explain to me how it works?

Hello,
I'm a first semester student here at Saba. I would be more than willing to try and answer any questions you may have.
To answer the health insurance issue, you have to buy third party health insurance to cover yourself in case something happens. Most people's health insurance from the US or Canada will not cover you while you are living away. A number of students arrived without it and are now in the process of signing up with the ACE insurance that you will get a pamphlet on when you are accepted to the school.
Cheers
Thanks! I sent you a private message.

Hey jratushny,
I'm wondering if you can answer a few questions for me: I'll be arriving in Saba in the Fall and am wondering if I need a laptop? If so, will an Apple be ok? Also, what do you think of your experiences in medical school at Saba so far? Are you looking to come back to Canada to do clinicals or res?
Any info about life on the island and the level of teaching at the school would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Moose

Just about everyone in the 1st semester class has a laptop. They are very good for getting the notes (on Powerpoint) from the professors. Most notes are also available on paper at the library. They cost 20 cents per page and you have to go pretty much each day to get the notes for that day's lecture (afterword).
I suppose a Mac would be okay if you can download Powerpoint notes from a PC directly onto it. Most people have a zip drive and load their notes directly off the classroom computer (it will only accept 100 MB zip discs) others use a USB or Memory stick to download the notes. Please note that I am not really too computer saavy, so some one else could tell you the particulars of USB's vs Zip Drives vs Memory Sticks, etc.
Back to your original question: I think you could get by without a laptop, but it is really nice to have. I keep my at home and only bring zip disc to class. At home though, you can use your laptop as an entertainment center (if you have DVD drive) and a useful study tool. Something to thinkabout when you're packing up all your stuff to bring down.
That's my two cents.
Best of Luck!

Can you tell me about the meal plans? How much are they? And what about those cowboy showers I hear so much about?!?
