Actually, we all should've seen this coming when our class rep announced last week that "The inability to take exams on a Saturday or Sunday for religious reasons will no longer be considered a valid excuse."

What kind of non-sense is this?? Are all semesters affected by this?? Why is there a need for Sat exams?? Five days in the week are not enough anymore!!!!! I was accepted to SGU also and I am seriously thinking about taking them up on it after all this new crap about block exams, tuition increase, etc!!!!!

So instead of only being tested only on Friday and Monday the test can now be Fri, Sat, and Mon? That sounds good to me. I rather have one exam each day than 2 or more on the same day. It's not like you can screw off during a block weekend anyway. Maybe I am missing something.

With two exams on Friday, you can at least take the afternoon off and catch a bit of relaxation before diving headfirst into the 48 hour cramfest that is your "weekend" before your next two exams on Monday. With this new proposal (which, by the way comes with the caveat that Saturday exams "May be administered at the discretion of the course director"), there is really no breathing room. After you finish your Friday exam, you study for Saturday, and after Saturday, how effective and/or motivated do you think you'll be to study for your uncoming exams on Monday?

As for your sentiment that this new proposal doesn't sound so bad...I hope for your sake, you won't have to experience it, but should you have to endure the same academic rigors we currently have, you'll learn otherwise.

Cornbread,
You have no idea! Saturday tests are NOT the answer. I can assure you. I vote Jon for president! We need to have a Sept 2003 uprising tomorrow at the Dean's meeting. Funny, how they always happen after the ball has been dropped. This definitely isn't student run or even remotely close to being concerned about what they are doing to us.
Later,

Aloha,

out of curiosity for the third semesters: how does this exam change affect you guys. for example, fourth semester, depending on which one of us you speak to, is kinda split on their opinions about this. maybe its better for us but not great. i think its better for the first semesters looking at the schedule. anyways... just curious about your opinions on the matter.

As I understand it, the 4ths lucked out since they have their pharm and path exams separated out. For 3rd, it really makes no difference anyway you slice it (Path/Micro/Physio/Neuro), because we all end up getting a nice fat helping of "SCREWED!".

Oh well...I'm easy. :twisted:

It sucks for us...and that's how most of the class feels from what I have heard.
Now with an exam saturday, there isn't a little bit of 'wind down' time until the study-fest saturday and sunday. I can say for myself that I would use friday afternoon to relax a bit...and possibly 'leisurely' review material. I would hit the sack early...and get up early saturday morning and start 'reviewing' and LEARNING heardcore saturday, sunday, and monday (depending on whether we had new material presented to us on thursday for our monday exams).
I gather that now there will be no new material presented thursday before exams, and it can be used as a review day or as new material for the NEXT block exam (per discretion of the professor). If there is no review that day, wouldn't one think that attendance will drop off that day before block exams?

I think this sucks. I know it sucks for me because of the way i prepare for these blocks. Seems like to me that there is no time to catch a breath during this upcoming block weekend.

There goes waiting in line for Spiderman 2 on Friday night....

The 1st semesters are fine, they actually got it the best:
Friday=Biochem
Monday=Anatomy written and anatomy practical
that's it...

I'd say go with Josh's idea and call MEIO:
NEWBIES! Voice your concerns with MEIO about how much Saturday exams and block testing would make you want to reconsider other schools!!!!!!!!!
CALL CALL CALL CALL CALL!!!! AND KEEP CALLING UNTIL YOU GET AN OFFICIAL RESPONSE!!!!!

(I'm expecting to be called into the dean's office for this..... oh well) :?

Hey Microphage!

I say that you find a way with your in-class ad-hoc networking james bond gadgetry to muck with the scantron machines so that they don't accept 'wooden' no.2 pencils anymore -- they'll only accept mechanical, flourescent green pencil no. 3 hard lead. Just once, maybe I'll have the right instrument walking into an exam.

--Sigh. I need a nap --

Newbie here that is gonna call MEIO and tell them how Saturday exams should not even be considered. You think the wallet on the desk thing would work like in the movies "Spies Like Us" where he tells the professor "There's a thousand dollars in my wallet...or is there??"

:D

Do call please for the sake of your class as well as ours.

As the he said "This is not a democratic decision." I've got the mp3 to back it up.

And I've never understood how the faculty can not recognize this site and yet read it constantly.
