SMU graduates can practice in all states except: CA and TX.

The CA Medical Board was just here, so we should have a decision regarding CA approval soon. If this goes through, then SMU graduates will be able to practice in CA, as well as TX!

I don't think SMU is legal in KS....don't they have a 10 year waiting period from school inception date?

I believe, once you get licensed, you can practice in any state that SMU is approved/accredited in!

In other words, you don't have to do your residency in the state you want to practice in.

You can confirm this with a school official.

Whoa, there! I would consult the rules posted on each state medical boards' website before going that far. http://www.fsmb.org/members.htm#b6

Texas' rules no longer automatically grant approval to any school approved by CA. Texas has a lot of other rules that must be followed exactly in order for an IMG to get licensed there (ie; must do a neuro rotation, all ACGME rotations).
http://www.tsbme.state.tx.us/rules/rules/163.htm#1633

Kansas' rules state only that a school must be in operation for " a sufficient period of time", which can mean whatever the board in Kansas decides it means for each school. http://www.ksbha.org/regulations/article06.html
Are there any St. Matts grads in Kansas that could tell you what Kansas has decided about St. Matts?

I'm not real sure what you mean by this. Often, you will still have to take the licensure exam of the state in which you want to practice. For example, if you got licensed in Oklahoma, you still have to take the Texas licensure exam to practice in Texas, since Texas does not offer reciprocity.

I think the school should be established about 15 years.

Kansas in 2012...TX is now completely independent of CA approval.

Soooo, CA, KS, and for all practical purposes TX as of 7:31 Pacific Time on June 22nd, 2004.

I was under the impression that Texas had adopted California's approval list. But, I guess TX no longer does that!

I stand corrected wolfvgang22! :)

You'll want to check out Pennsylvania and Indiana if you are interested in them, they have historically been pretty tough, and judged IMGs on a case-by-case basis. I admit to not being up to date on them though, it's been a couple of years since I checked on them so you'd have to consult their web site per the link above.

Where can I get a complete list of all the states that St Matthew students can practice? Also who can I speak to find out being lisenced?

I'm sure JP Yates (SMU School Official on this forum) can help you with that one!

Such a list probably does not exist, especially when you consider that SMU hasn't really been around long enough for it's students to apply for licensure in all 50 states. What SMU probably can give you is a list of where many students have done residency and where some students got permanent licensure.

Your best bet is not to rely too heavily on what other people say, but instead to do your own research with the rules of state medical board you are interested in. People here can give you pointers where to find that info, (like I did above) but ultimately it's on you.
