CAn someone please clarify the standards to meet licensure requirements for me?
I hope to practice medicine in NY, and as it stands, only the Big 3 schools, along with Saba and SMU are approved for NY.
HOwever, if I attend a school that is NOT approved for NY, will I still be able to gain licensure in that state by other means???
Secondly, if I start my education at a school not approved for NY, let's say St. Martinus, and in the middle of my basic sciences, the school is approved, then I should have no problem obtaining licensure in the future???
I'm not too sure how this all works. Some say the school needs to be approved prior to taking ANY courses. Others say the courses taken will be sufficient, even if they were taken prior to getting approval.

you have to guess that schools that aren't in the approval process in NY aren't going to get it in time for you.
Call the NY Board and talk to
New York State Board for Medicine (Licensure)

as you will read repeatedly on these forums it is risky behavior to go to a school 'hoping' you'll be approved by the time you are ready....

Define what you mean by licensure? Personal, professional or school? If it's school, try St. Matthew's University School of Medicine, who is currently licensed in NY. That means you can both train as a student and do residency in NY through St. Matthew's. Personal licensure means can you practice in that state after residency and for all states except Kansas, you can practice medicine. There may be changes to that but I would always keep checking with individual states regarding their regulations.
St. Matthew's may accept most transfer credits but it's on a case-by-case basis. Your best bet would be to contact JP Yates, St. Matthew's enrollment advisor.

I have confirmed with the NY medical board myself. If your school is not approved by NY, you can do up to 12 weeks of clinical clerkship in NY and you cannot do your residency in NY. However, once you finish your residency from another state, you could apply for a lisence and practice in NY. RTL

As noted above, you will definitely have to contact the particular state board. Also, please be aware that even within that particular state board, you may get inconsistent 'verbal' assessments. Read the state regulations for yourself. If you need anything clarified, write the board and get their answers in writing.

Who are the big 3 schools? By the way, is anyone aware of UWI being approved?

SGU,Ross,AUC
UWI is a mainline medical college which has produced many fine doctors. Do a google search and look at who graduated from it. Stop worrying.
