Greetings. Just came across this school as I was considering applying to mostly carib. schools. Can someone tell me the inside scoop on UNIBE? I checked out the website, but not much was displayed.
Is spanish mandatory? Are classes taught in English or Spanish? How much is tuition per term and year? How many months will I need to stay in DR?? Fed. Stafford available??? Lastly, is UNIBE approved in New York???
Also, can somene give me the same insight on INTEC??? What is the difference between these schools and Ross, Saba, St. Matthews, or St. Eustatius??? I've only considered mainly caribbean med schools. But are schools in the DR similar???

hi,
UNIBE offers a Pre-med and a Med program in English. How long you spend in DR depends on the amount of Pre-med requirements that you already have. I believe that the Pre-med program is a maximum of 2 years---don't quote me on that one.... You can matriculate into the Med program immediately from the Pre Med program providing that you maintain a certain grade average. Federal stafford loans are available at UNIBE just complete a FAFSA. PM me if you need more ...but i hope that i helped you out somehow. If you need more info, write a post to IVette on this forum...she has been very helpful.

Hello,
Glad to see someone else who's heard of INTEC :-P Well, the information provided you about UNIBE is largely correct. However, the length of their premed program is one year and four months if taken in it's entirety. All together the program at UNIBE including pre-med will keep you in the DR for exactly 5 years. Tuition is 12K per year (possibly to be increased this coming year to 15K reflecting the increase in price of neraly everything in the DR because of the economic crisis) Both UNIBE and INTEC are eligible for title IV funds (Stafford Loans) at the graduate level these loans will give you a maximum of 18.5K per year to work with.
Much the same is true for INTEC except for a couple of crucial differences. INTEC's medical program is completely in spanish; basic sciences and clinicals. INTEC operates on 3 month semester (4 in a calendar year) whereas UNIBE uses four month long semesters (3 in a calendar year). Another crucial difference is the that of the tuition between the two schools. At UNIBE it's 12K per year. At INTEC it's 6K per year. Another minor difference is that INTEC's med program if taken in its entirety is 5 years and 3 months long.
As to how UNIBE and INTEC compare to OTHER caribbean medical schools (the DR is also in the caribbean, lol) I can't speak to that. I do know that these other universities almost exclusively cater to students from the states. This can be a good thing, or a bad thing. In the long-stayed schools it shouldn't be an issue, But the marginal/newwer school, of which several have appeared in the past years, you should be leary. Catering to students from the states can lend translate into degree-mill like education. Watch you back, or better yet, stick to school who've been producing docs for a couple of decades. UNIBE was established in 1982 I believe, INTEC was founded in 1972, both have great track records.
Hope this helps. Take care and God Bless.
Ozzie.

NO means NO! Rejection letter???? Damnnnnn! At least i did not get one...
Your Financial aid form was sent to any one who applied for it. It has nothing to do with UNIBE acceptance at all. I sent my application to UNIBE, I never heard about it, and suddenly, Bammmm, my financial aid was set to go and fully accepted.
Just to show you how strange those folks are:)
