Can someone tell me the approximate cost difference between
living in the dorm vs living in an apartment?
Also, is is quiet enough to sleep and study in the dorms,
or is it loud and rowdy like in college dorms?
Thanks..

Get a dorm if you have the chance in Sept. most of the housing options have depleted(you'll more likely get the crappy places that the upper semesters who lived in dorms before didn't want). Don't sit there and consider the pros and cons, you'll have lots of time for that after your 1st semester. :)
The dorms are good for their purpose. It's about $900-1000 depending on if you get a single or a double. Utilities included which means run the A/C all day if you wish or plug in tons of electronics as you please. They aren't loud usually but that always depend on who you live with(if it's a double).

If you don't already have confirmation for the dorms in September, the housing decision has been graciously made for you.
Aloha,
Hey,
For those of you interested in living near the school, the appartment I'm in right now is up for the takes. Details can be found on the Apartment Exchange forum. I have created a new topic with a link to the pictures and other detailed information. Also, this apartment doesn't fall into the crappy ones that Microphage was talking about. Here is the link for this topic:

better send in that housing agreement with the $1500 deposit! They were just sent out, but I hear singles are being taken up quick already. At a $100 difference, unless a cute chick wants to room with me..

Wait.. what do you mean notification? You mean as in the housing agreement? That doesn't sound right.. I thought they just had begun the August dorms. The housing agreements just arrived like on Saturday and housing assured me there are still dorms available.

ok... if they sent it to you on saturday, 6 days ago, you should have mailed it back to them on monday, 4 days ago. if you have not, DO IT NOW. many students have sent their agreements in and they dont do it in time. its a race of which students send their agreement signed, with the security deposit into MEIO. when the secret number of available rooms fills up, if it has not already filled up, they send you a nice letter that tells you to find other means of leaving arrangements. the current student body is under the assumption that the dorms have already filled up since 99.5% of the students in the dorms received their notices to leave already. usually, the dorms only receive about 50-70% new students with older students having the choice of staying or leaving. this was not the case this semester. this is why i am still in the dorms after four semesters.

I sent the agreement and check by FedEX so it should've been there by yesterday.
Edit: No apartments have been assigned yet. If you send in your agreement and check, you will receive a reservation to assure you you won't be sleeping in the toolshed.
IS THERE STILL ROOM IN THE TOOL SHED???? CAN I GET A SPOT???? HOW MUCH IS THE DEPOSIT?????
IT LOOKS NICE AND COZY IN THERE, I WONDER IF TOP SECRET AND KEN SNORE???
AND RENT IN THERE IS BOUND TO BE LESS THAN WHAT THE BLOODSUCKERS ARE TRYING TO CHARGE ON THE ISLAND

Yoda, are your caps lock stuck or something? Stop shouting. As for room.. not sure, probably. Phone and check.

Methinks Yoda is already on island and can go directly to the housing office in the rotunda and find out for himself.
Speak softly, he must, and carry a green lightsaber!

the school should spend more money on the construction of a new apartment building.

No...but I can imagine some wet-behind-the-ears undergrad (who's probably posting from a public terminal at a UIC library) saying exactly that.
