View Full Version : After AUC? Basic question

Hey peoples.
I am from Louisiana and applying to AUC. Basic question; after someone finishes the 5th semester at AUC do you have any classes?? I just do not fully understand what is involved after cores.

I hear that coming to Houma, LA. for third year and Shrevport, LA. for 4th year is possible but isn't that just for rotations. Maybe I don't understand what "rotations" are. They must include class time right?

Is it up to me to figure out how and where I am going to do 3rd year. It just seems strange that I would be an AUC student but would never set foot back in the school after the second year. What would I be considered at Houma or Shreveport's med center? A visiting student?? Can someone enlighten me on the procedure a bit?

after the 5th semester at auc, you take the boards, hopefully pass, and then you start rotations. rotations are pretty much what they sound like... you rotate in the hospital/hospitals doing your core and then your electives. there is no classical classroom time but the hospital you are in is pretty much considered your "classroom". you basically learn to apply what you learned in basic sciences (semester 1-5) to actual cases. you still have your reading, research, prep stuff but mostly you are in the hospital. the fifth semester at auc is technically considered the beginning of your 3rd year in med school so that semester is less class and tests and more prep for the usmle with practice shelfs, kaplan review course and clinical H&P. thats why all the fourth semesters now, including myself, are yearning to get out of fourth... although we still have to have one class next semester (hematology) which we have not had yet... but everyone else from here on out, will have that class in third semester so 5th will be a lighter load and more for your "prep" time for the USMLE; which is really good.

hope that maybe clears somethings up.

later, :)

Thanks for taking the time to post. Do AUC students have a "list" of hopitals that they can do 3rd and 4th year rotations at?

Can you just pick were you want to go and that's it or do you have to apply and become part of a competitive process based on Step1 scores? I would assume that the hospitals in Houma and Shreveport has some say if I do rotations there or not. Don't they?

Your last post was very helpful. I have not read any threads of post AUC students finishing up in Louisiana. I am just trying to get my ducks in a row and see if finishing my MD here in Louisiana is a "walk-in" type deal at certain hospitals or if I will have to find a place to do rotations.

If you check the school's website it will show you clinical sites that are affilitated with AUC. I don't know though, if you can go to other hospitals and count them for rotations.

it is different for your core rotations and your elective rotations. electives are more complicated but basically you choose what they will be and where they will be after you complete all the cores. you do your core rotations first. i cant remember how many cores there are off the top of my head but i think its about 5 cores. auc has different regions that it has approved hospitals (contracts with) for students to go. region 1 is the northeast (new york and baltimore area); region two is the northcentral (chigago, michigan area); region 3 is the west (california); region 4 is europe (ireland and england) and region 5 is the south (louisiana). during your fifth semester you fill out some paperwork where you rank your preference for regions 1 through 5. the clinical sites office says that 98% of the time they can place you in your number one choise. worst case, you get one of the top two choises you gave them; up until now, the only requirements to get placed in a region was to pass basic sciences and submit a passing usmle score to the clinical sciences office. they are starting to put a system together where each student's gpa will have some sort of weight of who gets to pick first. in any event it does not really matter. the last time the clinical science director spoke to my class, he stated repeatedly that the school has only been able to fill about 70% of the clinical spots available in the US and in europe and noone is in danger of not getting a spot. no matter where you go to do cores or electives, the school must set it up for you through their office. that way they are kinda the student's "agent" and no mistakes are made with paperwork etc. etc. so basically you call them up, say that you want to go there, submit the paperwork to them and they set it up for you. thats all i really know so far about the process... hopefully i will be learning more next semester.

Bill Cornbread (and anyone else from Louisiana for that matter):

Rumor mill around school has it that we have lost Houma as a clinical site. I say it is rumor because one of my classmates actually went to the Dean and asked for verification, and he said that she didn't know what she was talking about.
Our contract with Houma ends this August...funny how people who were going to start there this fall won't be able to...

So, the great Southern region has only ONE Family Practice rotation in Florida. Can someone please inform the Clinical Administrators at this school that we do have a plethora of students from the South and would like to do cores and rotations there!
Vent on!

No, no...it's just back to England and Ireland for the whole bloody lot of us tossers (that's sarcasm, for those of you who are either a) in a current state of panic or b) from another school trying to bash AUC by implying that we're all going to be forced to do clinicals in England or Ireland).

After 2 weeks in England I can have it all figured out by just sticking with the saying ... "Do you follow?"

I still have the infamous comment made by him on that Immuno Friday about the "Asthma patient." Time index 31:30. I think we should make it play out the speakers everytime the dungeon's computer boots up.

Whoaaaa!!!!

What is this about losing Houma!!!!!!

Was it the school or Houma that ended the conection?

When did this occur and who can i get intouch with to ask questions.

Is the school going to try to renew the contract?

Do i have to do like Mark and start the whole process of getting Homua approved? btw, Does anyone have Mark's email address?

Not to insult anyone here, but instead of depending on this fourm to get information about this, can anyone give me the name and perhaps phone number/email address of someone in the admistration who can some answer some questions about this that are more than rumor fodder.

Thanks alot guys!!!

It was the hospital who booted us because they were full and had to get rid of someone(we were the newest there so naturally, we got the boot). I don't know if that's any more comforting but oh well.

JUST DON"T TAKE AWAY CALIF!!!!! hahahaha

How long did the Houma/AUC relationship last anyway? After searching it looks like only 1 year.

As I understand, the contract with Houma was for one year and expires August, 2004.
