Does anyone do this? How much does it cost? Is it worth it?
I have a seven yr old Honda Accord with 112,000 miles on it that I figure it's just better to sell rather than just let it collect dust for two years as it probably only has about two trouble-free years left anyway. However, what would be really nice is if I could import it to GC for a reasonable fee (something around $500). In that event, I would of course drive it to the nearest point to the island, probably Miami?
If someone could advise, that'd be nice. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure how much it would cost to have the car shipped here (Grand Cayman).
I don't think this is a popular option for most of the students here. A lot of us just buy a car here on the island. That is the easiest and most trouble free option in purchasing a vehicle here.
You can get a decent car for around $3,000CI ($3,750US).
With shipping, there are added shipping costs, insurance, shipping time, and all the paperwork associated with it, etc.

shipping is totally out of the question, i believe the fee from Miami is about 3000US, port taxes and customs will run you about 30-40% of the vehicle price as well...making that 97 accord pretty darn expensive. you can get a great Honda here for about 3000-4000CI, and it will have very few miles on it (because they are imported from japan). you will be able to sell it for nearly the same (if not the same or more) then you bought it for...so its a good investment
good luck!!!

I know of one person who had his car shipped from FL to Grand Cayman. They went through a broker who did all the paperwork, etc.
Not sure what the total cost was, but it took a while to get the car, get it licensed, etc.
Therefore, it is clearly more beneficial and efficient to purchase a vehicle here. In the end, it will save you money, time, and a headache.
Good luck!

How hard is it to sell the car? I mean, how long does it usually take to sell the car? To whom? Do SMU students buy and sell each others' cars (i.e. Before 5th semester students leave the island)?
Thank you!

It's fairly easy to sell your car, provided that it is in good condition, etc.
Many 5th semester students, as well as those leaving for Maine, sell their cars to other fellow students. Most students break even when selling their cars, which is not bad at all.
There are plenty of other means of selling a car. You can simply list it in the local Buy & Sell and get offers through that as well.
