i understand that you are encouraged to take a semester between 5th semester and taking the boards. is this a recommendation or is it mandated? also are you required to register for this term and receive financial aid, or do you sit the semester out and it counts towards the time alloted before loan repayment starts? tks-

I believe this "break" is recommended but not required. It can be very helpful in preparing for the USMLE Step I.
I'm not sure about the financial aid during this period.
I'm sure JP could clarify on that for you.

The National Board Semester is optional. This follows your 5th semester. You are still enrolled, still receiving Financial Aid ($15000 max from MedAchiever), and nothing negative will be put on your transcript.
You may use whatever methods and be wherever you feel is most conducive to your preparation.

thank you both for your info. i spoke with an MD that mentioned for some carib schools, you cannot take the boards immediately after 5th semester. He mentioned all of the concerns he had about carib schools and SMU passed with flying colors. Once again, thank you for your help.

I am a 5th semester and will be taking the 6th semester break. While not required to do so, the lofistics are easier. There are some exceptions - you can start the UK rotations immediately as well as the two sites that don't require step 1 scores in Chicago and Atlanta. On the other hand we have been going straight through for 20 months and a break will be welcome.
While the financial aid cap is $15,000 there is no tuition charge for the break semester.
