Fake it in Bihar, flaunt it at IMF
Manoj Chaurasia in Patna
June 16. — Here’s news for all those who thought that the reach of Bihar’s infamous fake degrees was only till Calcutta University. The dubious distinction goes to one Rajesh Khosla, who with a fake graduate degree managed to get a job at the Washington office of the International Monetary Fund. He worked there as a clerk for a few years till his degree was found to be fake in course of a verification by the authorities of the BR Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur.
That verification may never have been conducted unless IMF officials had insisted on one. Investigations revealed that Rajesh was never a student of the university. The degree is fake, IMF was informed. His “certificate’’ mentioned that he had passed the BA examination in the second class in 1980 from the university.
Indeed, BR Ambedkar Bihar University, Muzaffarpur, is notorious for issuing fake degrees. When Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan University sent 47 certificates to Muzaffarpur for verification, seven of them were found to be fake. Such certificates are first backdated by five to 10 years, and then put up for sale. And in trying to be wise after the event, the registrar, Dr Amjad Ali Khan, now threatens to register FIRs against anyone with a fake degree.
The university has also issued fake degrees to medical students. Only recently, the Medical Council of India sent 57 such certificates of students who had allegedly passed the Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicines and Surgery for verification. Twenty of them were found to be fake.
Last month, as many as 25 fake degrees were detected by the university.
