Hola Everyone,
First, thank you for all of your valueable information!! You guys are a tremendous help. I have been accepted into the Fall 04 class and I am really worried about anatomy because I have never taken this course (and I understand that it will be very time consuming). Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could suggest the best way to begin preparing for this course. I have purchased the Netters book as well as the flashcards. What should I begin with and how should I study the material?
Also, when I visited the island I stayed in the Wyndam and the shower situation was not the best. The water temperature would vary from scolding hot to freezing cold, and it would go through both extremes in a 20 second cycle and repeat itself. :x !!!! Is this normal down there or was that just the case in that hotel?
Random I know, but any suggestions on the best bug spray to bring down there?
Thanks for all of your help and good luck studying!!

There really is no point in trying to "get ahead" in anatomy. You have made the decision to attend medical school, and with the new block schedules, you will have more than ample time to study ALL of your 1st semester subjects.
If you must study, then you should start with the back (musculature, bones, origins, insertions, innervation) as that is traditionally what is dissected first.
As for the water at the Wyndham, that's the first time I've ever heard of that circumstance and should certainly not be representative of the water on the island. The electricity going out, on the other hand....

whether anatomy is going to be an "Easy" of "hard" course for you depends on two things: how much you study and how you learn best. if the only "weakness" you have is that you have never had anatomy before, then i can tell you from personal experience that it does not matter. i had never taken any anatomy course before i came to this school. what i did is a studied the hell out of anatomy. it interested me. now, the course director allows me to teach review sessions as a T.A. it all depends on the amount and quality of studying you do. as far as trying to begin before you come here: i remember getting my books a month or so before i came down and trying to flip through netter's and see what i could pick up. i did not know what anything meant. all i saw back then was a very nice picture of an anatomical area with lots of labels. it was not till i started and heard the lectures and saw the dissections that it all made sense.
as far as the shower, my shower in the dorms does that from time to time. i dont know about everyone else on the island but in both dorm rooms i have been in the shower temp changes by itself every now and then. i have just become really fast in jumping out of the shower if that happens.... kinda wakes you up in the morning before an 8am class if you sprint out of the shower to evade third degree burns.
later,
I am really worried about anatomy because I have never taken this course (and I understand that it will be very time consuming). Therefore, I was wondering if anyone could suggest the best way to begin preparing for this course. !
1. log onto http://hardrockhotel.com/peep_poolcams.php
then log onto your favorite airline website, book flight, head for the hotel pool.
study "anatomy" at the pool ( with a cold drink in your hand )
My message is this: you have plenty of time for anatomy. your life involves dwindling free time....like a giant hourglass.
the sands of freedom are falling fast!
make the most of your time while you still can.
when you get to school, be clear and sharp of mind having had fun in the days and months before starting.
anatomy is rote memorization, and really in terms of your medical career, not very important. not knowing it is probably not any disadantage. Just study the minutia every day consistently for 16 weeks, then forget 95% of it and move on to something more useful
