do u need to have a certain GPA at AUC to proceed to clinicals? like at Ross, for example, u need to get atleast a 2.9 GPA to move on to the 5th semester in Miami, otherwise u have to spend an extra semester in Dominica. is there any rule similar to that at AUC? thanks for your help.

pass step 1, pass all your classes, pay your tuition to the gold paint fund. That's about it. There is one additional thing, which is you have to pass one of these three sets of tests:
1) Kaplan tests(classes/videos given during 5th semester)
2) comprehensive shelf exams during 5th semester( I think thats right)
3) pass the subject shelf exams cumulatively during the 2nd semester to the 5th.

So nothing special in terms of GPA or anything. As for these tests, you'd better be able to pass these if you want to have a shot at doing well on Step 1 anyways so don't think of it as another dumb obstacle but rather as an important way to judge your knowledge and prepare you for your future.

BTW, in Ross: if you don't get a 2.9 GPA, then you have to take the comprehensive Shelf exam or whatever they call it and pass it to be able to move on. You can still get off that rock if you get a lower than 2.9 GPA and not spend additional time on the island if you pass that exam.

Geez, I have too much time... need to get back to clin path. Who's bright idea was it to bring clin path to 3rd semester anyways.....

thank u for the reply. u said clinical path is 3rd semester? the website lists it under 5th semester...is it wrong? if so, then what's the 3rd semester schedule now?

lots of changes are going on at AUC, some good and some crappy. IMHO: this is one of the crappier ones along with the block system(argh... how I hate our new block system).

The website isn't the most upto date(like how they are going to raise the tuiton by 500 dollars). They are looking for a webmaster the last time I checked.

Yes, I'm a complainer and I don't goto class. But I'm just a half moron, usually when I'm awake.

Overall, any of the big 3 schools will get you to where you want to go, you can't go wrong with any of the 3 schools. I know there other reputable schools out there but if you stick with the big 3 then you won't have as many problems later on. <=== my opinion, don't get up in arms over it guys. Whichever you choose depends on which school/island suits you best. For my wife and I, it's AUC. So start applying to all 3 and hopefully you'll get into your top choice  Good luck

i pretty sure about this but i could be wrong: the only requirement for passing tests in fifth semester is the kaplan comprehensive... its like a class so you must pass it. the shelf exams are there for your benefit... it would not look good if you did not pass them but as long as you pass the comprehensives, then you are fine.

as far as the schedules changes...

first semester: possibly that embryo and anatomy are being combined into one class so the embryo for each unit will be taught as part of the anatomy unit.

second semester: there is no more histo lab but the images are being incorporated into lecture.

third sem: clinical pathology is part of general path now which includes hematology. gen path in now an hour and 20 minutes a day

fourth sem: systemic path is now called pathology 2 and is taught for an hour and 20 minutes a day instead of an hour. also, they have added a pathology lab once a week for the clinical pathology portion for the material learned during lecture. basically, we learn the clin path tests for the systems as we learn the systemic path. also, there is a psych lab for med psych once a week. med ethics is an extended course.. we had it for 8 days for two hours a day this time instead of the usual four days. this is a permanent change.

fifth: no clin path and no hematology. more time to study kaplan

hope this helps,

by examining the new class schedules, it seems that 3rd semester is probably the most intense semester because you'll have gen/clin path, micro, neuro, AND physio. is this true? and what's the difference between physio 1 and 2? thanks

being a fourth semester, i am going to be biased and say that this semester is by far the most work i have done in med school. this is something none of us realized when we were climbing through third. pathology 2 is an intense course and its basically the reason for medicine... that course alone takes up 98% of the study time.

as far as physio 1 and 2: the first one is a combo with an intro to neuromuscular potentials and activity and then the rest of it cardiovascular physiology.

the second physio is renal, endocrine, pulmonary and GIT physiology. neuro physiology is pretty much covered in neuroscience/neuroanatomy.

later,

I'll probably agree with Speros here. 4th semester seems like a riot(just llook at at the test scores!). At the rate the 3rd semesters are also going, there won't be too many people joining the current 4th semesters in the 4th semester classes next semester. haha

Going back to clinicals....
I am from Baltimore, MD, and I want to do my clinicals at the hospitals in Balto that AUC is associated with. What is the probability that every student gets to go where they want in order to do their clinicals?

And to answer your question, nobody knows. There are hundreds(if not thousands of messages on this topic and I'm not kidding. Just do a search).
