Dear all,

I am currently attending a first-tier US medical school, finishing up my first year. However, personal circumstances necessitates that I return to Taiwan to be with my family. Is it possible to transfer into any of the medical programs in Taiwan, especially in Taipei or Kaohsiung. If you know anything about this, or can ask your dean's office for me. I would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much,
smileforme

From what I know, you have to deal with so many issues. Since you say your family is there, then you will most likely be chinese so:
If you are male, then you're in for a real pile of trouble concerning the draft. I'm not sure of all the details since I knew already knew I would have to join the draft so I decided against it.

You probably won't be able to come back to the US and practice since Taiwan med schools are not WHO certified or whatever.

Kaoshong has a medical school which yearly has an entrance examination for people who have graduated from with a bachelors degree and will accept students into the 4 year program as opposed to the 6th year program. I haven't looked into this for a while but the examination is similar to the MCAT with English and Chinese literature or philosophy(can't remember which, not that it matters.) lumped in there. Needless to say, you'll just have to hope and do well enough on the English section to make up for that section.

I know of one person who did get admitted with their high school grades into a med school in taipei but she had to start from 1st year in the 6 year med program. She had a bachelors degree in Science from Canada but it didn't matter.

But I've never heard of anyone transferring in from a first year med school to a med school in taiwan so I doubt I was any help. haha

They didn't want to look at her unversity transcript since that wasn't part of the admissions criteria. They compared her to everybody else using the same criteria(that applied for those few coveted foreign spots).

Taiwan medicine.. where you give antibiotics for anything and everything!

I think it is impossible to transfer to any taiwanese medical schools from the states. the taiwanese medical schools are undergraduate with 7 years curriculum, it is not compatible with American one.
Although Taiwan is not a member of the WHO, everywhere in the world does admit taiwnese MD degree, you don't need to worry about that, you just see how many taiwanese professors in the medical schools of the US and with their practices in the famous hospitals.
you may find some more information about it. I would suggest you stay where you are and finish you course, you may do your internship in Taiwan and residentship in Taiwan.
