Hello everyone,

Before I begin, i apologize for my ignorance of all information, hopefully you guys can help me out.

Apparently 1/3 of all residencies are in New York. Are SABA students able to do residencies in New York? I was on the http://www.fsmb.org/ website and I had no idea where to find information about SABA's licensure or accreditation status in NY.

Basically, I am wondering if I should take AUC over SABA based on the fact that AUC is fully approved in NY for clinicals and residency....or is this point not really important? Is missing out on 1/3 of the residencies a big deal? To me it sounds like a huge deal. Please help me out with this issue so I can finally decide which school to pick. Thank you in advance for your time and help, it is very much appreciated.

Regards,
Oakville Boy

From what I understand, Saba students are allowed to do 12 weeks of clincal rotations. Saba is not yet approved for its graduates to obtain a residency in the state of NY. I am not sure if Saba graduates are allowed to be licensed in NY. However, Saba did have a site visit in regards to approval in NY. If I'm incorrect about something/or missing some other information, someone please correct me. I hope this helps.

There are SABA graduates who have acheived full licensure in NY. As of right now, you are only allowed to do residency in NY in a VA hospital. Saba is awaiting full approval after the recent inspection, and it may come this summer.

Yeah, unfortunately, we're still not licensed by the state of New York to do residency. However, from what I've seen, we can do fellowships there once we're done with our residencies. One of our grads did his residency in New Jersey, then went to Mt. Sinai in NYC for his critical care fellowship.

As for the 1/3rd of residencies, I don't think it makes a particular difference. There are still plenty of other residencies available in IMG-friendly states such as NJ. Saba has had a good track record in terms of their residents getting placed in residencies.
