on the island you can get a cell phone where u can call the US for about 25c a minute. there are cheaper ways to contact the US though, you can use www.iconnecthere.com if you get a microphone/headset (you can get them for under 15dollars in the US) it shouldnt cost more then 1-2c a minute. the quality is pretty decent. another way you can go is by getting a broadband phone through vonage.com or another internet phone company. the positives with this is that you will have a US phone number so that if someone from the US calls you it will be a local call for you. i hope that this helps, feel free to PM me if you have any other issues or questions.
good luck!!!

did you sign up for service before you left for the island or after you arrived?

I brought my GSM Nokia 6200 cell phone from home and I'm using it here!
You can look into Cable and Wireless to find out their rates. All incoming calls are free and calls to the U.S. are fairly reasonable.
Also, you can check out www.callingcards.com. You can get calls from the U.S. for only $.13/minute! Great for having friends and family call you!

Thank you all for your help. communication is going to help. knowing that it is not as bad as the rates offered in the states is making it better. once again thanks.
