K... so I was just emailed this list by AUC for fall 2004. Anybody want to take the time to give their opinion on what's really worth it and what's not. I've already gathered from previous posts that the last one on the list is a negative :).

Atlas of Human Anatomy 3rd ed. if this is the netter's atlas GET IT. noone in this class is without netter's. in fact you really need all the anatomy books to do well. the only one you can do without is the moore textbook. instead of the moore, get the BRS for gross anatomy by CHUNG. (Board Review Series by chung isbn 068301563x this is the old edition so i dont have the newer isbn) this is a godsend for this class and along with benchmarks (text you get here) and netter's , they make a nice combo for this class.

Imaging Atlas of Anatomy 3rd ed. (optional) xray book that most students cannot find here to study the xrays for the exams. this is useful for the practicals. instead of being in the lab looking at the images with 120 other people, you can use this book and study on your own.

Clinically Oriented Anatomy 4th ed.1999 (optional) i think this is the moore text... i would not get it.. get the brs

Clinical Gross Anatomy : A Guide for Dissection Study and Review (optional). i know some students this semester that regret not having this book and its all checked out of the library. this book was written by dr. colborn. he used to be the chairman of the anatomy dept. here last semester. he also wrote the benchmark questions (the bible of the class) that you will use. this "pink" book really helps with simplified drawings and test question reviews at the end of each chapter.

Color Atlas of Anatomy (optional) i believe this is the roy and yokoshi atlas which is a photo atlas of actual dissection pics. this book is impressive and different than netter's anatomy because it shows you actual pics of what you are looking for. i used this book to quiz myself for the practicals.

Human Embryology & Developmental Biology 3rd ed.
i dont know about embryo text because the program is changing for next semester so i guess if it is on the list, then get it

High Yield Biostatistics, 2nd ed.
this is the only source for the biostats class so get it

Textbook of Biochemistry (with Clin.Corr's) 5th ed. (optional)
dont get this... it is just a paperweight

Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews Biochemistry
this is the main text in biochem and is essential

The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity 1st ed. 1998 (optional)
you can get this at the book buy back... i would not buy it ahead of time..microphage is selling his for food!

i know it basically seems like i recommended every book except for one but in first semester you need almost everything. the only ones you can do without are the listed above (one in biochem, moore in anatomy, and history of med). make sure you buy the BRS for anatomy, the netter's, the lippincott's biochem and maybe the xray book at home and bring them with you and try to get the others for cheap at book buy back. i personally bought all of them at home (www.half.com) and brought them with me. after first semester you can start to filter through the book list some more.

Also, I did not see a requirement for a labtop. A lot of the students have said that you can get by without one, but would it be beneficial to have one in the long run.

as far as flashcards, people either make their own, buy the netter's flashcards or dont use them at all. with biochem, i have not seen any f.c's used. with anatomy, there is a set made that is in the style of netter's but i would not get it. its not real practical to have it. i personally flashcarded the hell out of anatomy but not biochem.

as far as a laptop, i dont know of any students down here without a computer of some kind... not saying that there no students without a computer, i just dont know any. for the first semester you most likely will not use a laptop in class unless you like to type up notes in class instead of writing. for your second semester on up, you can get most of the professor notes on powerpoint and type notes on the actual slides during the lectures. i have friends that use their laptops everyday in class. i still use the old fashioned paper and pencil but i use a laptop for different programs that we have to use for each class. also, if you plan to get internet in your dorm room or apartment, you must have a laptop.

There is no point in bringing in a computer for 1st semester at all(except to watch DVD movies during History of Medicine). You might decide to during 2nd semester on up but most people still don't. I bring mine just to record lectures. I hardly ever take notes on my computer. I think a better way to go is to transfer your handwritten notes to the computer after class. It gets you into the habit of reviewing your notes daily.

As for outlets, you'll have to position yourself in the classroom to find a outlet and bring an extension cord with a power strip(share the weath).

I know this is a year old, but I needed to know if there were plenty of electrical outlets in the classroom for laptops (just in case 4-5 hours of battery life isn't enough). Did they do any electrical work in these classrooms since this time?

Now I was all for handwriting my notes, but I've been reading that people write their notes in the note section of powerpoint. Does anyone still handwrite?? I was originally considering a 17" notebook to bring down to the island, until I read that people made a habit of bringing their notebooks to class. So I've downgraded to a 15.4". I don't know what kind of desks we will get, and in case we get one of those flip-up desks, then my notebook should be just fine.
