View Full Version : Pro-IMG Article in NEJM
I just wanted to point out that in this week's (6/10/04) NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine), there is a really interesting article on IMGs in the US. The author, who, himself is an IMG talks about the critical contributions and roles of IMGs in America. It calls for PDs of US residencies and immigration policy makers as well as NIH directors to be open to the terrfic work that IMGs do and the hardships that they face. Anyway, I will let you guys make up your own minds about the article.

Many universities carry journals such as NEJM in an online format. However SGU is not one of those (but they do have JAMA). So if you still have online priviledges at your undergrad univ., check their library website.
Its an OK article. Most IMGs are from India - go figure. I think the fact that US citizens (i.e. me) have to go outside the US to become doctors in the midst of a doctor shortage is absurd. Thats ok, I think i'm getting a better education anyway. OK, i'll come down off my soapbox now.

Hi Nick. If you are still down on the island, stop by the library and ask them for their login name and password to access NEJM. They had them posted on fliers in the library for access to NEJM and Ovid when I was there. I used that same login until this year, when it stopped working.
NEJM is a nice journal because it has articles on most fields of medicine. That's why I purchased the subscription when I couldn't mooch off the school anymore.

Oops! After I typed my reply the rest of your message sunk in. It's a shame they don't offer access anymore. Oh well.

I feel your soapbox, Dr. Nick! But, like you said, I'm perfectly happy ending up at SGU. I went in "counting on" transferring out after 2 years... now I say "Screw 'em"! I'll stick with the school that gave me my chance, thank you very much!
The funny thing is, I agree with what many of the profs say - most SGU students, in my experience, just seem more motivated than many of those I've known that got into US schools. Americans, Canadians, Indians, etc., etc... it's like we all appreciate more how lucky we were to "get our shot" at this, ya' know?
Of course, I can't wait for the University of California to come asking for "donations" once I'm a physician... I already have my response letter typed out in my head!!!
