California is coming here to St Matts in two weeks, if we dont get Cali licensure (which i am really doubting that we wont get it because we just got NY and those two states are the only tough ones) i am planning to settle in florida or hawaii. i love california though...so im gonna just cross my fingers

Will you be able to practice in California if SMU is approved but you have already graduated?

I think the CA Medical Board has a retro-active rule: meaning that if you have already graduated from SMU and then SMU gains CA approval, then you are given the same rights as a current SMU student.
However, as always, it is always up to the Medical Board of that particular state to lay out exactly how they want their accreditation of that school to translate.

ok so, unless its approved in cali, one cannot get licensure in cali....this is the basic rule right...
then how do foreign doctors who come from other countries, come and practice here, for example plenty of my aunts and uncles are doctors from india, who just took the USMLE here and did their residency in cali and are praciticing here now....and they didnt go to cali approved schools either...the other info ive been getting is that if a hospital wants you to do your residency badly enough with them, they get you in their state....so is it that the rule is there, but can be bent??

If you do a search on "California" on ValueMD, you will get a ton of answers.
I don't know everything about the California rules as they apply to state-sponsored school in other countries. What I do know is that the CA Board has total and complete authority over those schools in the Caribbean basin that have a majority of students from the States (like SMU). It is their intent to protect the citzens of California, and it's a noble one.
There is no way around the lack of California approval, no matter how badly a hospital, PD, or group wants you. If you would only be happy practicing there, under no circumstances attend a school that has not been approved. If you would prefer to practice there, but would also be happy in other locations, apply where you wish.
Pat Park has always been very helpful and informative when it comes to questions about California.
SMU is very excited to be hosting the Board representatives for their site visit, and hope that they will see what the same quality program that we see. The finger crossing couldn't possibly hurt, though, AmericanIMG
Have a good one!

I appreciate your reply and all the info you have provided.
However, i again would like to address the issue of people who come from non carribean schools. How do people from other countries manage to practice in california then?

This is a great question for Pat Parks (CA Medical Board Liason).
Let us all know her reply.
Good luck!

ok this is how it works...California only recently decided to require site visits...i think it was on 92 (?). prior to that California was like the majority of states in the US, only requiring that a medical school be recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in order for its graduates to practice in their state. All graduates of school that had been licensed prior to the change were grandfathered in. this is the reason why graduates from schools from random places throughout the world can practice in California but Carib school grads have to await approval...if you want any more information please email pat park from california. her email is ppark@medbd.ca.gov and she is great at responding to emails at her earliest convenience.
cali applicants feel free to PM me if you have any questions on anything
good luck!!!
