Is it easy to maintain a vegetarian diet with the food facilities available to students?

You can but its tough because you will get tired of the cafeteria food. If you like indian food there is a guy who delivers indian food you can set a a meal plan (he also does meat dishes too). If you are indian I suggest going to the indian stores and buying those ready made packets of indian entrees. The grocery store in the mall has alot of items from the states you can use to cook something up but its more expensive than the states.

With the plethora of students here with roots in India, there are many vegetarians and they seem to get by pretty well. Lots of people also ship in/bring down ingredients from home with names i can't pronounce.

Nimitt,
How much does the Indian delivery guy charge?
And what kinds of dishes does he offer?
Thanks,

The whole crew came, the son, the wife and even a little one. He is a nice guy and is puctual with his delivery.
Indian Babu - he delivers all the usually punjabi foods and sweets you can ask him for a menu and he will give it to you.
There is also Miss Patel the nun that sells the snacks out of her little bag she also will make food and deliver for dinner and you could set up a plan with her.

Oh come on. You atleast gotta have a wrap while you're down here. They do have a meat-less version. Plus, talk like this is going to put Real Value out of business. I probably would never have tried okra unless i came down here. Swordfish and curried lambi too. Heck, just the other day i had dinner with some friends that was entirely Korean food.

Vegetarians.. poo. You guys miss out on the GOOD stuff in life. Like a medium rare Lawry's Prime Rib with mashed potato and creamed corn. Or Texas-style BBQs. Or experience the full spectrum of a Las Vegas buffet.. oh man.. that, and later on in life you're going to need B12 injections.

Haha, totally Dr. Nick, I'm not restricting myself in anyway, just wanted a taste of home, that's all. You had okra? LOL...hilarious...congrats on being adventurous.
By the way Dr. Nick, I thoroughly enjoyed your journal entries on your website, interesting stuff.

When thinking vegetarian, don't forget the Patels @ the upper True Blue bus stop. Their food stand is there every day, rain or shine. The food's not bad at all, and one can't complain about their prices, either. And they're super nice to boot.

ok. the patels are nice folks. but have you seen their teeth? people with that kind of teeth cannot be making "clean" food. i bought a sandwich from them once and promptly got very ill afterwards. i only stick to the peanuts they sell for 1 EC.
There are tons of vegetarian stuff at the supermarket and at every restaurant because of rastafarians

That's a great idea! I'll do a random controlled trial (RCT) trying to find the link between dental hygiene and food-born illness. Maybe NIH will sponsor it? Come on, please. Are you for real? Now if i did a study to correlate fluoride-treated water with better dental care, then i might be on to something. Infact, i think its already been done.
Ok, i'm not saying i haven't heard of other reports of illness after eating the Patel's food, but after eating about 10 chickpea and 5 soy roaties over the year, i'm still ok (physically that is). People get sick anywhere - sugar shack, glover's, Pearl's (Or indigos or whatever), and add every resturaunt to that list. Trust me, if student after student came to the clinic with one common source of food, then i'm sure the school would do something (or atleast the students would be able to deduce the cause.) That's exactly what happened after my term's orientation party down by the soccer field. I came to the clinic with obvious symptoms and they already knew where i got sick and what i ate. In addition, there tends to be a GI "adjustment period" among students when they first come down here.

How can you call it "writing" an exam when all you're doing is bubbling in answers?
Haha, all those Canadians and people not from the US writing their exams and then checking their "marks" afterwards.

Just wait until they ask you for a "rubber" or some paracetamol.

Actually you bring up a very interesting thing i learned. To us in the midwest (and everywhere else where the expression is not used) we spell it "aye." But in canada and new england its "eh." To a midwesterner "eh" is like saying "duh, i don't know" and shrugging your shoulders. How it is actually pronounced is more like the "eh" but get a southerner to say it and you will laugh, because it will sound like "aye." Just some random, useless knowledge. And Yes, i know Roots makes the warmups for the US olympic team. To an american Roots is a movie about slavery with Levar Burton (reading rainbow guy and Jordi on startrek).

See! You always learn something new from us canucks...

Ive come to the realization over the past two weeks that the human body is remarkably good when it comes to avoiding food poisoning. a couple weeks ago a friend of mine fed me something (lets just say that 6 days prior it was day-old sushi) and i was fine.
And then after what i saw last week, i dont think i'll ever eat at pearl's again. There was this dude cleaning that grill they use outside of pearls, and he was doing so with a can of BUG SPRAY!!!!!!!!!! that cant be kosher.
BTW, There is a proper sushi bar that opened the other day and la boulagerie is reopening this week.

todda..are you serious on the bug spray and the grill at pearls?
man...im really hoping that they are just using the can and perhaps the inside is the actualy grill cleaner solvent.

I am 100% serious and i saw it with my own eyes. unless BOP makes grill cleaner that smells like bug spray and has a picture of a cockroach on the can, it was bug spray. what they did was spray it and light the stuff on fire to make a blow torch, dont know if it destroys the the pesticides or not. Either way the chicken probably has less pesticide than the veggies you buy in the store.

Both my husband and I are vegetarians and we will be there in the fall. We are very used to our meat substitutes, i.e. veggie burgers, tofu, fake chicken, etc, and I'm pretty sure we're gonna have to learn to manage without them in Grenada, but we'll see how it goes. We should keep in touch and share good veggie meals that we find on the island!

actually, i was surprised at how much variety there is down here...they have a bunch of the Boca burgers/sausages/breakfast patties and whatnot here, it's not too hard to find. expensive, yes, hard to find, no.
the patels serve good food at amazing prices, you can get wraps or nachos at pearls/glovers, and a lot of the restaurants will have at least one or two vegetarian dishes, although you may have to eat salad if you are going out to a restaurant...they tend to be big into the seafood/meat thing.
vegetarians, don't worry, you will be fine!
