Do you think someone with a 2.9 overall gpa, 2.7 science gpa and 25 on the MCAT has a chance of getting into SGU? I attended a big ten university and I have extensive clinical volunteering and have worked full time in a medical office while going to school the past 4 years. The reason the gpa is not so good is because I didn't do good my first year (typical reasons ... I was not mature enough, ready) and then I had to withdraw or zero pointed another semester b/c my fiance was diagnosed with CML leukemia. (I spent that semester with him in a hospital.) I feel like if I got an interview I could explain very well and make a good impression. Please tell me your opinions.

I just want to be a physician...

Cat,

I hope so. Sounds similar to my situation. Hopefully someone who knows a bit more about admissions or students who have been accepted will be able to help you out here. I know there are a lot of us who are wondering about our qualifications as well.

Good luck,
Christen

Listen,

I think your numbers will get you an interview. I made it in to SGU, and I seriously doubted myself from the day I thought about putting in my application. My numbers werent stellar, but they gave me a chance.

Put in a strong personal statement and a good interview and I think you will make it! Make sure that someone proofreads your personal statement. You need to make sure that you are able to describe your unique situation effectively for the admissions committee. Alot of people will apply with similar numbers but you need to make other parts of your application process stand out!

Good luck! PM me if you need more advice.

i think you stand a good shot at an interview. I hope you address the weakness in your application as well as you did here; dont be overly apologetic etc just state things as they were and as they are now. I'm very sorry to hear what you and your finace went through.
All the best,
steph

You seem like just the student SGU was created for - someone who is a strong student but came upon hard times and thus their stats suffered, low enough that US schools didn't even look at them and consider their unique situation. And if you decide to be an oncologist, you will be able to connect with your patients in a way many simply can not. Your last line says it all.
