This has probably been addressed someplace else, can someone provide evidence and interpret of how UMHS graduates are eligible to practice in a state that hasn't taken on the cali disapproved list. Every board I've read says it has to be accrediated by the LCME or Recongized by the U.S Department of education, which they're not, to my knowledge. Maybe I'm reading these wrong?
Also states that claim cali disapproval, like oregon or Washington, have a post residency rule, where you can practice in another state for 3 or 5 years and then apply for a liscense to that state?
Thanks and sorry if this has been asked

Its kind of annoying that the "Welcome Packet" still lists that Washington and Wyoming use the Cali list, because they don't. Washington and Wyoming are IMG friendly, and IMG's match there every year. 3 St Matthew Students, along with others from "non-Cali approved" Carib Schools matched in Washington just THIS PAST MATCH, while more students from "non-Cali approved" Carib Schools match every year in Wyoming as well. So that's definitely not true. I've heard a School Official state that the "WWAMI" which is (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) uses the Cali List, BUT THAT IS NOT TRUE.
UMHS is accredited with the St Kitts local Governing Body, which makes them eligible to be IMED listed, which we are. Most states for IMG's require that your school be IMED listed, that you've passed the Step Exams in less than "x" number of times, and that you've completed your rotations in ACGME OR School Approved sites, while also requiring that you graduated from your Med School in good standing.
And... like my "sticky" mentions above..... NY and FL approvals deal ONLY with completing rotations there, NOT licensure, which we are eligible for in NY/FL

Hiii Im interested in UMHS, but I still dont know in which states I will be able to practice one I graduate :noidea:. I imagine that Cali wont be one of those. :( . If someone knows PLEASE can you post it.
PS: BTW I know I should call state by state, but it will be easier if someone knows already. THANKS

What about Oregon?

You should be able to practice in all states that have not adopted the cali approval regimen. From previous threads, I believe these states include all of them except for cali (obviously), kansas, and idaho. Texas might also be on that list too. Guess we'll wait for the expert to show up lol

The list is significantly longer than that, I'm afraid.
Texas has just posted new laws on the subject, and several other states have adopted the CA list... a partial list includes:
Arkansas
Colorado
Indiana
Kansas
Massachusetts
New Mexico
North Dakota
Vermont
I believe that there are a few others.

No. I'm from the East Coast. I am just curious about Oregon.
According to the Dean i.a. of Clinical Sciences, the states that follow California are Washington, Arizona, Montana, Idaho and Indiana. Students who graduate from UMHS would probably not be eligible for their first license in these states but, once they received a license in another state, they would be eligible for a second license in all of the listed states except California. As we have said several times before, students who desire to practice in California should not attend UMHS. Licensure in the other the other 49 states is certainly possible,

Drmedicine,
You are still correct. You yourself SHOULD check with the states in which you want to practice. While it is easier to ask someone on here, you have absolutely no idea if we really know what we are talking about. By checking with the state boards, you are assured of getting the most accurate answer. Since your career is at stake, it is worth getting that degree of accuracy.

Thanks folks!
Thanks UMSH Official. California is not one of my priority sites to practice, but I like to know what my choices are. Now that you mention that once I get a license in other states I''ll be able to apply to one of the cali followers is a relieve.
I guess all the situation may also change with the first UMHS graduates.

Washington definitely does not use the California List. I've verified this with the Washington State Board multiple times. They told me UMHS graduates would have no problem getting a temporary and permanent license there.
Arizona is another one that doesn't use the Cali list either.

Be careful of school "officials". (ALL carib schools fall under this umbrella not just UMHS). Check with any state you are interested in and then be aware policies change, some worse (Californicated states) some better (ie Texas). Don't just blindly follow school officials on this website or over the phone.
peace.

Could someone cut and paste from a state medical board showing how UMHS meets state requirements for a state, say like washington or another non cali state.

Could someone cut and paste from a state medical board showing how UMHS meets state requirements for a state, say like washington or another non cali state.
Washington:
Medical Quality Assurance Commission - WA State Dept. of Health (http://www.doh.wa.gov/hsqa/Professions/Medical/physician_eli.htm)
Copy & Paste:
Eligibility Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates
1 - MD Degree or equivalent (MBBS, etc);
2 - 2 years of post graduate medical training accredited by the United States Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) – unless you graduated from medical school prior to July 28, 1985 then only one year is required;
3 - successful completion of a national licensure examination: National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), Federation of State Medical Boards Examination (FLEX), United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), or the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC); and
4 - a standard certificate designated "valid indefinitely" from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) - in place of the ECFMG certificate, successful completion of a Fifth Pathway Program for licensure prior to 1958 in the U.S.
So...... for
1) UMHS = MD degree
2) After 2 years of residency you qualify for permanent licensure
3) Complete all your USMLE exams
4) Because UMHS is IMED listed, once you graduate you will also receive an ECFMG certificate verifying that you've met the FMG guidelines
