Just wondering if webcam/microphone is allowed on campus internet to talk with family/friends back home for free?
If so, where is the best place to do this? Do you guys use MSN/Yahoo/AOL?
Thanks,
IndianBabu
This is in answer to your question if webcam/microphone is allowed on campus internet......

Do bring in mike/headset stuff, though, coz you just never know when what may come in handy.

But does MSN Messenger count as a telephone program?
Confused...

You will find SGU had lots of rules, many of which are not enforced (grenada too if you look hard enough). Earlier in the year C&W blocked Dialpad and other voice-over-internet services, but now they're working (so is Kazaa). You ask a very important question because many of the internet access points are quiet areas. Most people who talk over the internet go outside Bourne or outside the library. You'll need a wireless card for both, and a good computer battery because outlets are hard to find. AOL IM and MSN messanger work ok, but i haven't had much luck using their voice features. The histo/path lab is a talking-ok zone, but its hard to find a place between the histo reviews going on and path students studying, but you can find ethernet ports there. Even still, talking for reasons outside of school related things there is frowned upon. Hope this helps.

My SO began school last term and we communicated by webcam for the most part. Since I didn't have Windows XP (running 2k), we couldn't use the webcam features of MSN, so we used Yahoo. My SO had problems with his system getting knocked offline, and I did too, but we were unable to determine for certain that the cause of htat was Yahoo. I've used netmeeting, but that was a bit annoying, trying to find an IP address for my SO in Grenada.
I've been told that if you go outside the library at SGU on a fri sat night, you'll see about 20 people, all talking with their SOs (presumably) over the internet, mostly using voice conferencing, some using VoIP, some webconferencing.
Hope that helped. : )

So do you guys think it is worth it to buy a webcam and headset and bring them down to the rock? :?

Dude, there's never an evening that you don't find at least 1 or 2 people talking over their computers using a smorgasbord of yahoo, AIM, net2phone, dialpad, iconnect or whatever's working that night. Generally outside the library & Bourne, also inside the library on all floors. The best spot: if you can find an empty room with live ethernet....yesssss! Doesn't happen too often, but still bring a LAN cable. I'm glad I took mine, specially life saving when the WI-FI took mini vacations every so often.
So, just as Nick said, there's a difference between what's legit/not & the degree to which it's enforced (hence the highlighted word 'allowed' in my previous post)
So, ya, bring that headset & webcam.
